Is Shelly Duvall really that bad of an actress or what that just part of the character she was playing? Her dialogue is some of the most cringeworthy moments I've ever experienced watching a movie. It's up there with your boy getting stabbed slowly in Saving Private Ryan.

She was literally mentally abused by Stanley Kubrick the entire time on set. What you see on screen is exactly the performance he wanted out of her.

I always assumed that Jack beat the shite out of her too. She was always one nag away from a beating.

I still wonder if it was her that drove Jack crazy or the hotel. I actually root for him to get to her with that axe.

One of my favorite movies though. Horror is probably my least favorite movie genre but I never can seem to turn it off when it comes on tv.

For an interesting look at the mind of Kubrick, watch "Room 237". Most of, if not all, of the conspiracy theories are total bullshite, but Kubrick put so many subliminal mind fricks in that movie, it's ridiculous.

That's the main complaint King has about the film. He always says, Jack showed up at the hotel crazy in the film and that is not how its suppose to be.

What drove him crazy in the book; It was a mental breakdown due to; Lost job. Stopped drinking. Guilt from hurting Danny in the past. His nagging wife. Isolation at hotel.

All of those but ome start before entering the hotel. All of that was eating away at him and the hotel was the final straw .
