Why didn't they go back to the bar for alcohol? Why had no one been there to take it? I realize it didn't matter because they wouldn't have been able to keep it when the farm burned. But alcohol could have been used to trade with other groups.

My guess is at that time they didn't really consider that there would be a whole lot of groups running around. You have to take into account that in TWD world zombie/apocalypse movies/stories never existed. These people are flying blind 100% of the time.
