I find they're giving themselves a hell of a lot of credit here. Obviously, this is a slanted article - they insist on painting Tarantino as a "cop hater" - but what other kind would be drawing such a conclusion?

I think The Hateful Eight is performing how it was always going to. If anything hurt it at the box office, it was Star Wars, but even that strikes me as a stretch. It's just not a movie with the commercial appeal Tarantino's previous two films had. I personally love it, but it's not like a talky, three-hour stage play type movie was ever going to set records.

But let these guys pat themselves on the back, I guess.

The Star Wars release date was announced at least a year in advance. They should have released Hateful 8 the first week of December. Tarantino screwed himself with this one.

The Hateful 8 trailer doesn't make me want to see the movie. I'll probably go see it just because it's a Tarantino flick, but the trailer didn't really spark much interest.

It's a near three hour Western that has already made its budget back in two weeks of wide release. Really, did they expect this to make Avengers money?

It's because of the illegal screener release.

I'm surprised the Manitowoc County PD isn't taking credit.

The only part of TH8's box office numbers that worries me is that Tarantino's attempt to get more people in seats failed. He's been pretty open the past few years about how most movies are shot digitally and don't offer much more than what can be experienced at home on a nice entertainment system. He offered an overture, an intermission, and a 70mm marketing campaign, and people didn't care.

I know it's a fleeting dream of mine, but I wouldn't mind more movies taking risks with how they are presented.

Without really realizing it myself, I think that Tarrantino's style is starting to grow stale. The self-consciously ironic and gritty and sometimes anachronistic characterizations were exciting and refreshing once upon a time, but I just did not get as excited as I thought I would to see Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell in a witty gritty western.

I'm assuming a sort of a "Pulp Fiction visits Tombstone vibe" and it just didn't stir my juices to go see it. Not when so many other top notch movies came out at the same time.

The roadshow release actually did strong numbers, but it was only 100 theaters.

His movies aren't real movies. They aren't real stories. They are mastabutory fantasies he filmed.

There is some truth to what you're saying, but I just call it fantasy drama, or fantasy historical fiction dramedy. I have liked Tartantino films for the most part, but like I said, I think the bloom is off the rose.

ETA: To the point of the OP, I'm as supportive of law enforcement as you'll find, and I thought Tarrantino's comment was typical Hollywood bone-headedness, but it is certainly a non-factor for whether I will watch the movie or not. If I started boycotting every artist, actor, comedian, director that I disagreed with politically, I'd have nothing but home movies to watch!

They're delusional morons. The lack of success stems from mediocre reviews, bad marketing, a three hour length and opening alongside Star Wars.

As far as Tarantino himself, he's still making solid films but he's falling victim to what he used to criticize others directors for, moreover, the death of Sally Menke has really hurt his films in terms of their length and pacing.

I heard Tarantino added too many parts of "the Black man putting the white man in his place" like we've been seeing all over TV.

Maybe that was it. I dont know though, that is just what I've heard and I havent seen it yet.

I've never been a QT fan. Thought almost everything he's done has been "meh". And my opinion of his movies was confirmed the first time I saw him interviewed.

His movies and dialogue have always struck me as written by someone trying too hard to sound cool. I can just picture him in front of his computer giggling, "Oh, boy! This is going to sound sooooooo cool! I'm gonna have him say 'motherfricker'!"
