Watched the first episode last night with my wife. The episode was titled Trophy Kids and features clips from the documentary of the same name:

quote:

In the 40-minute cinéma vérité documentary that serves as the bulk of the hour-long program, the audience meets four parents and five children across a wide range of sports -- golf, tennis, high school basketball and football. We go to practice with the children and parents, watch them during competition, hear their screams and curses and often cringe during the brutal post-practice and post-game conversations captured on film. Basketball dad Steve yells so loudly that his son tells him "shut up or leave." Tennis mom Jamie wants to support her sons’ athletic success but defers to “God’s will.” Golf dad André curses repeatedly in public and withholds encouraging words to his prodigy daughter Amari “until we get where we’re trying to go.”

One of the more heartbreaking and difficult-to-watch scenes takes place after Justus, the would-be football star, gets interrogated by his domineering father, Joshua, after the 15-year old is pulled from a game. “Whenever I get in the car, I feel like I’m in trouble,” Justus says to his father, tears in his eyes.

I swear I not only recognized the awful behavior of some of the parents from my days of coaching HS basketball and then reffing, I also found myself getting angry. The entire documentary is available on HBO Go and I am debating whether or not to even watch it.

After the 40 minutes movie clip was over, Berg interviewed Todd Marinovich and a Family Counselor. Marinovich looks like what I would imagine Layne Staley would look like today if he had lived.

I also felt so sorry for these kids. At the end of the show my wife was in tears.

Sounds interesting. Overbearing sports parents are so fricking awful.

That can't be good for Marinovich.

It really was an interesting piece.

I couldn't decide which parent was the worst.

I frost tips guy was a douche, but I think it was between the golf girl's dad and the football dad.

The tennis lady was just loony.

The thing that I did not understand about frost tips guy was. How could he afford to not work? I don't think they ever said. Also, he claimed that the goal was to just get the kid into college for free/play college basketball. With the amount of money that he claimed to have spent on the kid with basketball training, he could have easily paid for any undergrad degree in the country.

Frost tips said he owns 9 businesses, whatever that means.

I saw a reference where his kid, Derek is playing D-II basketball

Supposedly sold a bunch of businesses????

Likely in organized crime or something illegal.

Even sadder is that now, Justus has almost no relationship with his father. He left his private school and moved back with his mother. He's playing football for his local high school.

Derek accepted a five-year scholarship to Division II Colorado Mesa University, a far cry from the Division I scholarship Steve proclaimed "was the goal."

Blake and Tanner made the JV tennis team as high school freshmen.

And Amari won the Kikkor Golf Classic in Southern California - a tournament at which parents weren't allowed on the course.

Coincidence? Not a chance, given the way Andre carried on in the film, reducing Amari to tears.

Yeah, I remember them saying he reached the goal and got his kid into some crappy basketball program. But he said he dropped like 300k or something like that on all of the training. What a dipshit.

The worst was the black dad with the kid who played football. The kid sucked bad, and they dad had it in his head that his kid was actually good. I actually think the kid has some sugar in his tank. Their story was the saddest

his mom was nice

the tennis mom was weird and her kids could barely stop from outright laughing at her with her "God's will"

I wonder where was the golf girl and basketball player's mom? And where was the tennis twins dad?

Marinovich is in a really good place. Watch the 30 for 30 ESPN feature. Very humble, made peace with his dad, has a good life. Meanwhile Marv is still a trainer to star athletes.

Do you have any children of your own supatigah? LOL.. I am basketball dad STEVE, Do you know me in any way what so ever, or the amazing, loving, caring, great relationship I have with my son Derek to comment so ignorantly after hearing one statement from me trying to motivate my son and him reacting in a very cool manly response! Which we discussed appropriately in private after the game, so morons like yourself with no knowledge of our relationship wouldn't continue to show their ignorance!Learn about someone before you speak and make a fool of yourself and get the facts first before you talk complete shite!
