The season finale last night could have easily been the SERIES finale! Last nights episode leaves me wondering about how the show will continue. With the group splitting up, the only one communicating with the Machine now is Root. I can't see the series continuing as it has been unless they all get back together somewhere other than New York. Opinions on last nights episode? Theories about the future?

Spoilers

I loved the finale last night. The twist with Vigilance was well executed.

As for where do they go from here? Root said their move was never about winning, but about surviving. Their fight with the old man and Samaritan isnt over. Now that they are hidden from Samaritan, it seems to make them more free to actually become a Vigilance themselves.

I guess their names and faces are hidden from Samaritan, but if they continue rescuing people (I'm guessing the machine will still be giving them numbers), wouldn't Samaritan eventually pickup on the group of people getting into gun fights and stuff every week?

I don't know what I think about them now having to hide out from Decima and Samaritan. They'll eventually have to find a way to take Samaritan down. But I guess it'll be a nice change of pace for them to have Decima hanging over their heads for the next season.

Honestly, I was never behind the HR/Elias (although he is a good character)/Vigilance/Samaritan/whatever the hell sidetrack story. I understand a series has to evolve, but I just want the number that they have to deal with week to week and let's move on.

I kinda agree.
I think they went a little too far out there with the intricate side plots.
I like a combination of back story and number of the week.

I'm still 2 episodes back.. but holy cow, at 2 episodes back it's so obvious this show has only gotten better (and from start it was already one of the best, I can NOT wait to finish up this season over the weekend!)

Completely agree, I had to make sure there was a Season 4 after watching it last night.

Watched last night, crazy ending.

What is the old man's plan? I assumed he wanted to use decima for his own personal gain, monetary or otherwise. But then at the very end when he asks the machine what it wants from us I was thrown for a loop.

The old man's plan was never for personal or monetary gain. He basically believes that mankind needs to be supervised because we can't be trusted not to screw things up. He basically explained his ideology when he was on the rooftop talking to Harold and the Vigilance guy.

I must have missed that part, whoops.

But still, if that's his plan shouldn't he relay that to the computer instead of asking it what it wants us to do?

I think what they've done is turn a very solid procedural show into the best show on television.

Also, if that's all he wants why not just leave Finch's machine alone? Why kill so many people and go to all the trouble if there was already this type of system in place?

I guess I missed a few important details along the way

That's just it. His whole plan was to get it online and then find out what it wants him to do. He is now the decima version of root.

Because finch ensured his was a closed system that doesn't control everything. It jus gives us info for us to decide what to do with it. Samaritan is not restricted in this way.

Ah I gotcha.

I'm also kinda sad that the gang split up. When they were all walking their separate ways I was like 'aw man this sucks'

My biggest question was this: they talked about how the servers are hiding them now, but I don't remember a mention of hiding the machine. It seems like Samaritan would be able to locate it, which would be a problem.

Also, was that the only purpose of what root did? Could the machine not infiltrate Samaritan with that hardware?

That won't last very long. I think they are just splitting up temporarily until the heat cools down a little. I think the machine will still be giving them numbers. What I'm wondering is how Samaritan won't be alert when the same group of people are involved in gunfights and other violent confrontations on a weekly basis.

Last season the Machine hid itself. Do you remember when they went to the west coast to find it and it was gone? No one knows where it is now.

From what I understand, yes, Root modified 7 servers to 'hide' the identities of their group (one server for each person - Finch, John, Shaw, Root and the 3 geeks that helped Root.) It was interesting that they didn't protect Lionel, but he never had any knowledge of the Machine anyway.

Last season Samaritan wasn't online.
