My dad somehow thought it would be okay

I think I was 9 or 10 when my Dad took me to see Jaws - until then I was a fearless swimmer in any body of water. When we went to the beach, I stayed in the water - I loved riding the waves on those blue and red rubber rafts - no swimming pool for me. After Jaws, to this day, I will only wade in a little - never past my knees...

The little movie theatre in Covington didn't get Jaws until several months after it was released nationwide so I knew what was coming. I didn't avoid the water but it sure made me wonder what was swimming down there besides me.

The theatre played Legend of Boggy Creek at the start of each Summer. We spent so much time in the woods, I would say that movie had a bigger impact.

I seen Jaws at the Robert E Lee Theater and went to Thunderbird beach the next weekend. I watched for Sharks all day-no lie.

I was borderline afraid. However my then girlfriend and I went to Daytona Beach two days after seeing the movie in the theatre in New Orleans. When we got to Daytona and were cruising the beach before going to our hotel, we heard on the radio that, the day before a young teenager was attacked by a shark near the pier/Merry-Go-Round area losing most of the back of his knee and calf. We were checked in to a place about a mile south of that spot.

Now THAT movie had a big impact.

Too close to home.
