Wow. Tobias Menzies doesn't get near enough credit in the US for his acting range. His tight roping between super sadist and "affection" towards Jaime is so fricked up on so many levels. There was obviously foreshadowing there with his response to Jenny but damn. He may have moved way up the list of best movie/tv psychopaths with this performance.

And kudos to Outlander for going there. Male sexual assault, especially in that period, is not something that is addressed very often. As well as the psychological aftermath.

Poor Jaime. Dude has legitimately been to hell and back. I did like the nice touch of Claire psychologically torturing Black Jack with the date of his death.

They overdid it with how much they devoted to the assault.

Considering I've read all of the books.....I disagree. That assault forever changes Jaime and it haunts him for several years after.

My wife read the books and said the TV show did as good a job as possible and they never would have been able to air the episode of Randall did everything that was in te book.

Yes I did think it got bogged down with their love obsession and then the torture, but looking back it was necessary.

I enjoyed season 1 but liked 2 better.

I know others that have read all the books that agree with me.

No shite

Doesn't mean that they have to devote basically an entire episode (or was it more than that?) to graphically showing him getting raped.

They could have cut half (or more) of the rape shite, and the point would have still been made.

But they overdid plenty in season one. Season one was actually pretty shitty television. Season two was solid overall, but the finale was pure garbage.

What they showed didn't even touch the surface of what happened to Jaime in the books.

Also, remember the target audience of the books and the show....women. Yes, men can enjoy the series as well but the show is made to cater to fans of the Outlander books....which is mostly women.

Never forget...the MAIN storyline IS Jaime and Claire's love story. Everything else is just what happened to be going down around them. The rape episode was done the way it was to make the viewer have an emotional response to it. And to see just how much Claire has to overcome to bring Jaime back mentally to her.

As a huge fan of the books...I actually loved the finale of season 2. It included the important aspects of the book (obviously they can't show everything from the books so it's nice when a show is able to still stay true to the books). Again...they know this series has a huge cult following of women that have been reading these books for years and have been excited for the series ever since they heard it was happening.

Yet, we still get the point, and easily would still be able to had even if they didn't spent 1+ episodes with such a constant, graphic depiction. Not to mention the other flashbacks in future episodes. It wasn't necessary. It was basically an hour Hostel movie.

I was just talking to my mom about the finale (she enjoyed it) I just couldn't get over how awful the acting was by one of the new characters they introduced.

I guess I was just so excited about that character (I'm assuming you are talking about a female) being introduced finally that I didn't pay attention to her acting. I REALLY love the books so seeing the stuff that happened in the finale finally take place made me really happy in a book nerd way.

Just finished Season 1 last night and pretty much agree - final 2 episodes veered dangerously close to being straight out torture porn.

I realize I’m bumping a very old thread, but I just finished season 1. Last 2 episodes were torture (pun intended). After the finale, I just kept asking myself, “WTF did I just watch?” They definitely went further than was necessary to get the point across.
Black Jack has to be the most sadistic character ever put to screen. It’s like he told Ramsay Bolton, “Here, hold my beer.” I feel worse for Jamie than I did for Reek - at least Theon had it coming.
I’m enjoying the series so far, but it is a tad slow. Very well made, but not something I can binge at this point. I’ve watched season 1 over the course of a few weeks.
