The guy MM slapped was Steve the drunk from Deadwood. Gotta love HBO's recycled actors.

The early timeline is set in the 90s. MM's character said he was in narcotics in Houston until 89.

possibly the best series premier i've ever seen, including how that's so not that area or especially the people from that area

The info on my guide said the original murder was 95 with a similar case happening in 2012.
The office they were questioning MM in "current day" looked more dated than 2012.

In the pitcher's house, they had a photo of the old Alex Box in the background. Straight heat.

Yeah....they two detectives parted ways in 02, after working together for 7 years....
And after that they had not talked for 10 years.

Interesting that it seemed like they were treating Rusty as a suspect

Gotta believe the preacher/minister guy with the glasses that showed up at the office near the end is the killer.
He's connected (brother of the Governor?), and he said "a war is coming". He also had a sleazy look about him and McConaghey was skeptical of him.
Sounds like a Christian zealot/fanatic who likes to kill hookers.

One episode and I've set the DVR to record the rest of season. Think 1 of the 2 new detectives suspects Rust (MM.) Woody is definitely banging the woman who brought him papers.
Writers seem to have done their homework. Recognized a few locations. The coroners office in the abandoned parking lot was shot on Jeffeson Hwy/Labarre Road right around corner from where I work in Jefferson.
Looking forward to next week.

this looks pretty good. Actually got some people with true LA accents. Treme should take notice
one of the black detectives is also Brother Mouzon from the Wire

Yep. They're definitely more interested in Rust than Marty. Whether he's a suspect or someone they think could really crack the case. I agree that the preacher is a shady character.

"You went off grid for 8 years"...now back and new murder.
Thought the coroners comment about talking to an anthropologist could be big going forward. Think we're gonna see some good old fashioned snake handling as well.

everything set in LA is shown as like 10-20 years older than it is in reality

Hell, gas prices were 99 cents a gallon when he saw the "ghost" of his daughter.
