Pausing my first watch of 30 Rock to participate in this. i have tried several times to get into the show but never got past a handful of episodes. I am hoping that doing it like a group like this will help push me along

It's also strange to see Bodie as a rookie dealer in the pit in the first episode - just barely above hopper.
No kidding. Same with Carver too.

I watched the first 2 episodes last night.

Do all projects have random furniture just sitting outside or is that a Hollywood stereotype/misconception?

Shitty developments with low income individuals usually will have just about anything outside. I'm sure they just got tired of standing and became resourceful.

This America, man.

So I was thinking about this scene this morning. The American dream, more or less, is the idea that if a person works hard enough there is opportunity to succeed. To the people in the ghetto this is their hope, but they don't see themselves as having the same opportunities. They have to steal or sell drugs or otherwise engage in nefarious activity in order to succeed. Although it is destructive no other options offer the same type of advancement. So when McNulty asked the guy why he let Snotboogie sit at the card game, the guy was really saying that he didn't want to take away that part of the American dream that belonged to them. Everyone should at least have the opportunity to sit at the table.

This seem like a bit of a stretch to anyone? I think my explanation my be falling apart a bit at some point.

This scene was pretty much ripped from Simon's book Homicide A Year on the Killing Streets

See, shite like this is why I'm pumped about this rewatch. I feel like there are a lot of things I missed the first time around...or maybe things that I caught, but didn't realize how powerful they were.

fo sure. i watched The Target last night and notice key characters we wouldn't have know, like WeeBay and Bryd in the court room. Also i thought Shardene didn't show up for a couple of episodes. McNutty also seems to know a bit more about the organization than i realized at first as well.

For this rewatch I will focus on the other side of things, alas the chain of command perspective. I remember getting real emotional rooting for Mcnullty and the other detectives without rationalizing why the unit was against them doing what they were doing. (Trying not to spoil).

I tried to do that when I watched the whole series again a 2 months back (perfect timing ), and you'd think there'd be a graphic out there that shows all of this...but there isn't.

I basically had to google positions of command. And what's weird is at different city sizes and different parts of the nation, not all the positions are at the same level or exist. So it gets kinda tedious to figure it all out.

The trick is knowing who the top dog is in the police force. Who he works for. Then base everyone in relation to them.

McNulty is 3 or 4 down the chain of command. Griggs is the same level as McNulty. Herc is bottom.

So it goes, Herc>>>>McNulty>>>SGT>>>LT>>>Major>> Col>>Deputy>>>>Commissioner?

Either way, I realize everything isn't as black and white as I made it seem the first watch. I could definitely put myself in the shoes of Major Rawls (as far as the first season goes). McNulty was pretty damn selfish and an insubordinate. I do respect those in any occupation doing it for the love they have for it, rather than seeking the career ladder but I also don't judge those who seek the career ladder, ambition is very admirable.

The first season illustrates how brilliant Avon was as a leader of men.

They did kind of change the structure during the run, too - where they went from Majors to Colonels at one point. I'm guessing that implied a reorganization, because they were never explicit.

Initially, it went from the commissioner, to the 2 deputy commissioners, to the majors in charge of the various divisions, and it appears that majors ran the districts. At some point, some of the major spots got bumped to colonels in later seasons, remaining under the deputies.

In real life, Baltimore has a "Chief" who is below the commissioner and deputy commissioner. That is confusing to folks outside law enforcement (and to me), so it was omitted from the show.
