I was very disappointed. I didn't like the cliffhanger. It just didn't feel the same as any other film in the series. It dragged greatly and so much could have been cut. The hobbit could easily have been fit into two flicks. Way, way too much filler. Smaug was great, though. And I am a huge LOTR fan. This one was the weakest of all five. By far. Hoping the final is better. I don't see how it can't be.
Watched it today and this was my take as well. I sorta expected it though. Figured it would be an "Empire Strikes Back" type of movie in so far as a transition that was meant to be doom and gloom before the redemption in the 3rd one.
Also, I thought it was by far the worst of the 5 so far. I liked the Hobbit. This one seemed stretched. There just is not enough material in the Hobbit for 3 long movies. I feel the attack on Lake town and Battle of Five Armies are going to be extremely drawn out in the third one. That is about the only material left to cover. The battle has a lot of ups and downs and is like a roller-coaster in the book, but it is only a chapter or two and I feel they are gonna have to do some extremely long drawn out battle scenes that will get old to fill enough time.
I figure the 3rd hobbit will be better than this past one but the second weakest of the 6 movies. Desolation was well made, there just isn't enough material IMO. Overall I enjoyed it enough and won't nitpick it, I just think three movies is overkill.
