ETA: Let's not hijack this thread....After this movie is out, we can start making list and comparing Fox-Marvel to Marvel Studios.

This thread should be about the latest film from Fox-Marvel's "shared universe" Fant4stic Four.

off topic of the movies

can somebody explain to me the appeal of FF4 to a modern audience?

i get that it was a group that argued and was the first real space option for Marvel fans in a time before we actually landed on the moon

but i could never get into the comic way back when and i just don't see the appeal of the property. that's why the movies keep failing, imho. also the team just doesn't translate well to film. their powers look silly and are "weak" compared to what we've come to expect

Their powers aren't that weak, but the characters are bland. They're a watered down Avengers, basically. They aren't mutants so they aren't affected by the human v mutant thing. They aren't castigated as vigilantes.

They aren't really that popular, they're just old and well known. The comic was a low seller.

The only thing I see the adding to any of the established universes is there villains.

but I don't see what the Fantastic 4 themselves bring to the table that wouldn't be redundant

The main draw of the FF is the Ben Grimm character. Prior to Logan, The Thing was the most popular of the Marvel superheroes. He was loud, powerful, and loaded with personality. He was New York City in monster form.

What the FF has that the X-Men and Avengers do not have is that they're a family. The Avengers changed members on a quarterly basis but the Fantastic Four were a core of four. A brother and sister, a husband/brother-in-law, and Ben Grimm, who served as the big brother to the entire family.

When the FF added or lost a member, it was a huge deal. But you always knew that they'd return to the family four. You don't find that anywhere else in Marvel or DC.

FF was also where some of the biggest events in the Marvel Silver Age took place. Galactus, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, The Inhumans... Spider-Man had intense stories that dealt with New York, but the FF were dealing on a galactic and interdimensional scale. In the Silver Age, it's where everything that was huge was happening.

All of that, yes.

Also, Dr. Doom is always in the running for best villain ever.

frick this movie and studio for what they continue to do to him.

He's not even in this one.

The next issue of Secret War comes out on the 12th and i am pumped for it. It has been amazing thus far, but I find it funny that Secret Wars is such a heavy Fantastic Four book when they have the new FF movie coming out. I was under the impression Disney hated Marvel to feature any characters they didn't have the IP for.

I think it's interesting that Michael B Jordan was on Live this morning and he spent more time talking about Creed than F4. He was also visibly more excited talking about Creed because he seemed bummed out when it was time to talk about F4.

i wanted to imply, but didn't want to derail the thread too much, that the X-men (not initially but eventually) took all the positives of FF4 and improved upon them, including the brooding, emotional character (with Wolvie). X-men also expanded the "space" universe a great deal as well.

yeah that's what i thought. it was the first "space" property

Well, he's the star of Apollo, so he should be more excited about that film.

I think that the actors are at a loss because they signed on for an "indie" version of the FF. The studio wanted an edgy, young vision from the director of Chronicles. Then when they got what they asked for they reshot it and turned into just another superhero happy meal movie (or so it seems at this point).

They're basically promoting a movie that they were told was broken and needed fixing. That's a tough sell for young actors.

I think that it was easier for Paul Rudd, since he's got a long track record and he's had to promote shitty films. Easier for him to promote a film that changed direction mid-stream. Ant-Man came out better than some of his films that had zero changes by the studio.

Watch the ‘Fantastic Four’ Cast Endure the Summer’s Most Awkward Interview Yet
quote:

Co-host Bailey begins the interview with what he called “the obvious question” — how is it that Jordan and Mara are playing siblings Sue and Johnny Storm? “You’re white and you’re black,” Bailey helpfully points out. In fact, if they’d been listening, the radio jocks would have heard Mara answer the question before they even finished asking it. (“Sue Storm was adopted,” she tells them, only to have Bailey snap back, “Don’t ruin my question.”) Jordan, who has been asked this question a lot on the press tour and is clearly tired of answering it, diplomatically replies, “They could be raised as brother and sister. There’s a whole bunch of different family dynamics that could be without the obvious adoption.”

But things don’t get really awkward until Rickman starts talking about Mara’s hair. “You’re way, way hot,” says Rickman. “Why’d you cut the hair? Your hair was beautiful.”

“This is a great interview,” Mara mutters, before revealing that she chopped it for a new movie. “I’m an actress. I have to be a chameleon,” she explains patiently.

Rickman continues to harp on Mara’s hair, prompting his co-host to ask, “Is that weirding you out that he’s doing that?” And then Rickman puts the icing on the cake, telling Mara, “I’m a toe guy. Your toes are fine.” Mercifully, that’s when a publicist cuts off the interview.

On their radio show this morning, Bailey and Rickman defended their interview, complaining that they have been mischaracterized by the press. “This show’s M.O. is not out to be the ‘shock jock’… That’s just not how we are,” said Bailey. According to the hosts, questioning Jordan about his character’s race was not a racially motivated question. “For some reason, Michael B. Jordan… is very sensitive about that. Who knows why?” said Bailey. (We’re guessing it’s all the hate mail he got when his casting was announced? Here’s an essay the actor wrote for EW about it.)

As for complimenting Mara on her feet, Rickman doesn’t think he crossed a line. “Her feet were right there in front of me. She wants me to notice. Why else get a pedicure? Why cut your toenails?” he asked.

Bailey concurred, saying of the backlash, “I think I just don’t understand.”

I'm guessing they get worse interviewers than that.

Now I'm interested in seeing the original version, I've heard really, really good things about Chronicle.

But some of those Atlanta VIP premiere attendees have been voicing their opinions, embargo or not.

And you know what?

They’re good. Could the reported division within Fox be nothing more than that?

Shawn Madden @smichaelmadden

No it's all good, I saw that stuff a couple of days ago...Ellen Page (who's done a lot work with Fox) also said she like the movie as well as Dwight Howard.

I wouldn't see big time celebrities (unless it's someone like Oswalt) trash a movie.

I will be seeing it(but not paying for it)...for review purposes and to critique it.

If it's a decent film, but not a good F4 film, like how I feel about DFOP, I will say so...but with the reshoots and the treatment of Doom,Thing's voice,Mara's wig evident in the reshoots, I doubt it.
