No shite. That's probably 1 on my list.
No Zodiac or The Social Network also stands out.
Of course, lists like this are like assholes.

Far worse than I would have ever guessed. Only a small fraction deserve to be on it.

Correct.

But I couldn't make it past #3 on that list. I was laughing too hard

See, that Cinemaholic list is great. It's not my list, and I disagree with some of it (most notably Children of Men), but it's a well-rounded list that tries to feature all types of cinema from all over. You can tell some effort went into that list, which is really all you can ask for.

It wasn't essentially bragging about the most obscure films you could think of. I watch my share of pretentious cinema, and I wasn't even familiar with about a third of the NYT list. One or two? Cool, I'll seek it out based on your other selections showing judgment. But when it dominates the list, it feels like showing off.

There Will Be Blood might be the most polarizing film of my lifetime. People have such strong feelings about it. Some people revere it, some people don't get it.

Personally I think it's GOAT and will meet anybody who thinks otherwise at Sonic for tatertots and fisticuffs.

Oh, I get it. I just think it's not terribly good. The characters don't go anywhere and there is no dramatic tension, as there is no point in the film I do not feel that DDL is not going to absolutely crush his rivals. Furthermore, I don't think he CARES that he ends up isolated and alone. It never mattered to him.

It's a movie about a guy who only cares about getting rich fulfilling his mission of getting rich. The end. I'll take you up on the tater tots, though.

I like There Will Be Blood, but I don't think it would make my Top 25. I just don't see how it's as clever as it thinks it is though. I'd say Children of Men and Lost in Translation (among others) are far superior films to it.

This list certainly reinforces the "fake news" label.

Boyhood was a decent film, not top 25 IMO.

I'm really coming to the conclusion that it is the most overrated film of all time.

Decent is being generous. It was boring gimmicky shite, with mediocre at best acting other than Hawke.

I appreciate the idea of it, but the execution fell way flat.

And 40-Year Old Virgin at #25? If you're going to include a comedy just for the sake of it, that's the one you pick?

Ah yes, anyone who doesn't worship the movie obviously "didn't get it"

40 Year old virgin shouldn't be on the list. It's a fine comedy but nothing about it is more remarkable than Anchorman or Stepbrothers or Borat.

I didn't like Mad Max but I guess it is good for what it is. For action movies I'd rather 300 or Gladiator.

Moana is the best animated movie IMO.

I think people would enjoy Boyhood more if they pretended Patricia Arquette was the main character. She was fantastic and made the movie for me. The problem is that the boy is totally unlikeable and gets worse as he grows up. I don't know if that's due to his acting or the writing or both but he is a greasy douche by the end of the movie.

As far as following people over time, Linklater did it much better with his Before series. I would even put Before Sunrise in the top 25.

Have you watched it lately? I used to agree with you that it was a top film, but I watched it recently and it really doesn't hold up well. Scarlet Johannsen's performance comes off really poorly 15 years later.

It's been about a year since I last saw it, but I'm 100% confident that it holds up for me personally. I lived abroad in Asia for a couple of years, and that film is spot fricking on what it's like to be a stranger in a strange land. I was also studying abroad for a time there, and I was starting a job in Beijing when everyone left to go back to the States and Europe. This film helped me get through it.

It will always be a movie near and dear to my heart. Maybe I'm biased, but I still can't find a flaw in it. It's a perfect movie to me.

OBWAT doesn't qualify as it was one of the last released films of the 20th century.
