I keep hearing it's the best show , but watch from the beginning or you'll be lost. So does that mean the beginning of season 6 or the very beginning (2011) -5 seasons to make up is too much

then it's too much for you

I'd find it pretty much impossible to start now and in any way feel like you didnt need any backstory. And it's all backstory

Why would you think by beginning they meant season 6?

So when you hear watch from the beginning, you think just watch the latest episode?

It's only 10 episode/season so it's only like 2 "regular show" seasons.

Meh. It's a great show - extremely well-resourced and well-done. If they had put a little more effort into Rome, for example, THAT show had tremendous potential.

But, at this point, you're looking at 4500 to 5000 pages to read to catch up. Dense pages. Slow-going pages. So, it's either read 200 hours or watch ~50 or so hours to catch up. Pick your poison.

(The books are better and you'll retain more.)

I've watched it from the beginning and still often don't know what the hell is going on

This isn't Three's Company or iCarly where you can pick up from pretty much any point and just go because each episode can be independent of one another.

This is high-level storytelling and as such you have to start at the beginning.

It is known.

don't watch it

you sound like an idiot and this show has many interconnected story lines and you might not be able to keep up with them all. But hey I still think you are cool for never watching it.

I usually just suggest that people start at Season 4, Episode 5 around the 27 minute mark.

If I were to get the books and read them, in which season would that put me?

I have not seen the show either. I want to but I am trying to get through the audio books before I watch any of it. I have a long way to go as I am only half way through A Clash of Kings. Based on how broad the books are and the number of characters I would imagine you would want to start at the beginning if the show is anything like the books.

The end of last season, except for one character's story.

Did you really need to ask this question?
