Netflix plans to spend roughly $5 billion on original content in 2016. The company has been aggressively building up its Netflix Originals empire this year and has scored more new hit series including The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Marvel’s Daredevil and Sense8. This expansion comes at a cost, however, and Netflix will need to raise prices to cover them.

They already announced it was going up $1/month in two years for current subscribers. I thought it already started for new subscribers.

Appears to be going up again to cover what they are now spending.

Their original content is great and all, but they need to come correct on putting out more movies and other TV Shows to keep people subscribed. I mean yeah, people love the orignal content, but that's not why the signed up for Netflix.

They can just wait a week or two until the episodes of the original content go up on ITunes or wait 6 months for the DVD set to be released.

That number can't be real, can it? Isn't the total topline of all of Hollywood only like $12 B?

I don't mind throwing a couple more bucks a month at them for the combination of original content, BBC content, and regional TV shows they carry in their full runs. And I already roll with the $7.99 plan with two screens and HD streaming. I know at times they've had issues with their HD, so I don't know how the Ultra fares.

I will also say though that in terms of movie content, I prefer Amazon Prime. If Netflix offered the rental option that they do they'd easily correct their big deficiency of newer movies in their rotation.

Not sure how that's relevant, other than proving MY point. There is 0% chance that Netflix is spending $5 Billion next year on Netflix original content. I think some of these articles are getting confused. Variety has it right:

quote:

According to the company, almost 90% of Netflix members have watched original content, “another indicator that we are on the right path,” Hastings and Wells wrote in the letter.

Netflix “will devote more investment to originals both in absolute dollars and percentage terms” going forward, including TV series, documentaries and standup specials as well as original films, the execs added. Netflix’s global content spending will approach $5 billion in 2016 on a profit/loss basis (representing about $6 billion cash).

The $5 Billion is their TOTAL content spend (including original).

Again, 0% chance they are spending $5B in one year on developing Netflix originals.

I loaded up on their stock yesterday after it split and it increased 18% over the last 24 hours. That's the only price increase I give a shite about, and I'm not even a subscriber.

I can't stand Amazon Primes interface on my macbook. But the interface on Amazon FireTV makes me use it more.

As many have said already. This price increase really doesn't bother me. But I would like a few more options as far as TV series go.

Wish they had a "request" feature. Let them listen to their fans as far as tv goes.

Didn't it used to be something like $17/month a few years ago? People still paid for it then, so I wouldn't sweat it.

What's killing them is the devices per account simultaneously thing- how many people do you know sharing accounts, and then think about how much netflix makes if all of them are paying the 8 dollars or 12 dollars a month (if you dump an extra four a month you can squeeze in like 4 extra devices at the same time).
