Full disclaimer : Just because the contract is about to expire doesn’t mean that Netflix can’t renew the contract and if that happens, then it’s likely all these movies will remain on the service. It’s also worth noting that not all of these movies are showing expiration dates on Netflix so some may be saved and others lost.

NetFlix decided what direction they were going in when they didn't renew the deal with Starz 5 years ago. They decided to become the next HBO instead of something new and disruptive. I'm not saying they definitely won't renew this deal, because HBO does offer a selection of movies too, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they let it lapse. Nobody keeps NetFlix around for the movie selection.

The movie selection is pretty weak. Even their horror movies have gotten weak. It used to be i could always find a cool horror flick. Not anymore.

I cannot remember the last time I used Netflix for a traditional movie. They had a cool documentary selection that has gotten a little weak (or I have seen too many of them).

These two don't jive with each other.

Yes they do, NetFlix is focusing on Original Programming, as is HBO. The unoriginal/nonexclusive content is a secondary concern to both.

I have HBO and I rarely if ever stream movies.

It's all about the frankly awesome streaming of original content.

I typically use Netflix for TV shows (especially older shows out of their original run) and Prime for movies.

It's hard to be disruptive with a product no one wants is what I'm saying. You say that they decided not to be disruptive by not carrying a large catalogue of movies, but then turn around and say that no one keeps Netflix for their movie selection. Let's say they did focus their resources to maintain a large catalogue of movies instead of original programing. By your own logic no one would keep their netflix subscription. The scenario you seem to be describing is them to be disruptive AND not make money.

5 years ago or whenever the Starz thing went down, Starz wanted them to go to tiered pricing. NetFlix didn't want to and their renegotiation fell apart. In the same time frame HBO had said they'd give "meaningful content" to NetFlix if it went tiered, probably the deal Amazon got. So if NetFlix had just gone to a tiered pricing structure they could be HBO Plus, not HBO Too.

I think there are quite a few people that would pay at least $10 per month more for NetFlix if it say had the HBO deal Amazon got and Starz content and movies. Back when they had Starz people still complained about the quality of movies but it was "I watched this movie and it wasn't great" which is a different dilemma than "I can't remember the last time I used NetFlix to watch a movie." And again, with a tiered pricing model, a higher tier could get you more movies. It wouldn't lose money, they just can't do it for $10 a month.
