As movie theaters struggle with tepid sales, Mitch Lowe has an extreme proposal for how to get more people into seats: Let them come to all the showings they want for about the price of a single ticket each month.

Lowe, an early Netflix Inc. executive who now runs a startup called MoviePass, plans to drop the price of the company’s movie ticket subscriptions on Tuesday to $9.95. The fee will let customers get in to one showing every day at any theater in the U.S. that accepts debit cards. MoviePass will pay theaters the full price of each ticket used by subscribers, excluding 3D or Imax screens.

Ted Farnsworth, chief executive officer at Helios and Matheson, said the goal is to amass a large base of customers and collect data on viewing behaviors. That information could then be used to eventually target advertisements or other marketing materials to subscribers. “It’s no different than Facebook or Google,” Farnsworth said. “The more we understand our fans, the more we can target them.”

Theater operators should certainly welcome any effort to increase sales. The top four cinema operators, led by AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., lost $1.3 billion in market value early this month after a disappointing summer.

It's actually a brilliant idea but it will never happen.

lack of time and convenience of streaming have been my biggest reasons for not going to the movies this summer. with two toddlers i can only go to the theater after they are in bed...and that's pretty tough after a long day.

Eventually the VR tech will be there and you can put on a helmet or whatever and feel like you're at the movies, complete with sound and everything, and not have to leave your couch. You'll pay for your "movie ticket" and that'll be that.

sounds like it'd be a win for the theaters because they'd see more concession sales.....not sure the box office would be wild about that model though.

but they may need to start looking at ways to adapt sooner rather than later

I dont see why theaters do not go to this model...don't they make their money at the concession stand anyway?

It's happened. I've been a MoviePass member for four years. The pricing has gone from $25 a month up to $39 a month at times, and I just got the e-mail telling me I'm now paying $9.95 a month.

Some things to know before you sign up:
- 2D movies only
- You cannot pre-purchase seats online. You have to be at the theater to buy your tickets, and only for a movie that starts within the hour. Since AMC Mall of Louisiana is the only theater without reserved seating, you won't get the best seats at the other theaters for newly released movies.
- They have been known to change their policies without warning (for a long while you had to wait 24 hours between movie times).
- They will sometimes tell you to take a photo of your ticket to prove that you aren't seeing the same movie twice
- You can use it for any theater in the greater Baton Rouge area (except the Manship downtown when they show movies).

I think I'm signing up today for 9.95. Can I only buy one ticket at a time?

It would sell subscriptions, like all services, to people who use it a lot, a little and none at all.

But yes, concessions would be the big winner.

Whatever happened to the guy/company that was working on a "same day as theaters" digital release that would allow you to watch new releases at home for like $40 a viewing?

I would love to have that.

One movie per day per account. If you're married, you each need your own account.

You download the app. They send you a Master Card. You go to the theater, once you're close enough geographically, you can pick your movie time on the app. They put the money on the card for that feature, you pay with the Master Card.

So if I take a date for a movie I only pay out of pocket for one ticket. Nice.

FYI: AMC has their Stubs Premiere cards. You can get points at AMC for the ticket price, even though you're paying with the MoviePass Master Card. I get about $10 a month from my AMC points (they throw points at you left and right).

You just have to tell the cashier not to use your AMC money on your ticket, since that just gives MoviePass a break. Cash in your points at the concession, or buy your date's ticket with the points.

For every you there would be 2 people that forget they have the service and dont make it to a movie that month. I bet the average trips/month would equal like 1.4 and people would be more likely to buy concessions if the movie is "free" that time.
