I just finished watching it and it was by far the strangest movie I've ever seen. I really don't understand what is so great about it. It was an ok movie

You don't understand it because about 30 to 40% of the movie was stuff originally shot to be a tv series. Lynch cobbled that footage together with the core part of the film to make mulholland drive. The core film is actually quite good hitchcockian film noir...some of the TV show scenes are not good.

It's a movie for intellectuals to fawn over while telling the masses they "just didn't get it".

The movie is a whole bunch of nonsense.

I've always considered it to be a movie that isn't held back by the cliche of saying it is "open for interpretation".

I know we hear that a lot with movies, it becomes repetitive, and it loses its meaning.

The plot of the movie doesn't just make a 180, but all of the characters essentially switch. It isn't something that happens in film a whole lot. And, you are right it is "strange".

One of the leading theories is that Betty is infatuated and in love with Diane, so the beginning of the film is Betty dreaming as if she is playing the role of Diane's life. The realization of her not actually being Diane comes to her when she opens the box. Think about when you wake up from dreams. The only reason you remember certain dreams is because you wake up during them, and for a lot of people, they wake up because they realize they are dreaming.

But this is just one theory among many.

It isn't held down by a straight lined plot yet it can still make sense, and for that reason it is heralded as one of, if not the, greatest movies of the 21st century.

(Although my vote is for In the Mood for Love.)

I really enjoy all of Lynch's films (as well as Twin Peaks).

If you want to think about his movies you can, but if you feel like just being entertained while turning off you can do that too.

Very unique director.

I think it needs repeat viewing. Best at about 4.
