I am definitly on the "I really generally don't like manipulatively dark endings" but there times where it is called for.

I think Marlon Brando should have died at the end of On The Waterfront.

That whole killing himself without killing himself was kind of lame. Great movie though.

Law Abiding Citizen - they really tanked the ending on this one. Clyde should have killed everyone.

So much this. I get the feeling like that when the screenwriter came up with the movie that that was what he had written down, but the studio was like "No way! We can't let the bad guy win no matter how awesomely cool he is! REWRITE!!!"

The Natural. It's a fabulous film and I loved the ending.....

Until I read the book. Malamud's sobering ending would have gotten this film the award season recognition it deserved.

Passengers

Came to post this.

***Spoilers***

Chris Pratt should have died shutting down the reactor forcing JLaw to live alone for years until she broke down and woke someone else up staring the whole cycle over. Just my opinion. I hated the ending to that movie!!

Jerry Maguire

Both the title character and Rod Tidwell were money grubbing low class assholes. I hated to see both of them achieve happiness at the end.

Also, Darth Vader should have successfully murdered Luke Skywalker. There's just no way a wildly inexperienced nube would defeat a much more experienced and naturally talented Vader.

This really goes back to the books, but Harry Potter. He should have had to actually die to defeat Voldemort. It was a cop out to have him come back.

Hollywood doesn't like it when the bad guy wins.

Thank goodness

Tidwell had CTE and wasted his quan with his brother TJ

And jerry's self destructive behavior led to eventually cheating, alcoholism and cirrhosis

:sigh: You clearly missed the point of the Deathly Hallows.

And damn this thread.

The Natural was and is a fantastic movie. The ending to the movie plays better on screen. It's iconic watching Roy round the bases as the sparks rain down. And I guarantee you are hearing the score in your head right now. Roy needs to be redeemed onscreen. It plays better and makes for a better movie. If he takes the bribe, he's not a tragic hero he's just a scumbag.

Law Abiding Citizen is different. If Clive kills everyone at the end and wins, there's resolution to the story.

Some things just translate better in print than onscreen.

Another example. The movie Dodgeball originally ended with White pegging Peter in the final game. They lose. "Average Joes gets nothing." The end. Roll credits. It tested horribly. So that's why the ending is really over the top convienent and everyone gets the perfect resolution to their stories. It's kinda the director giving the finger to the audience. But what they fail to realize is it turned a movie from something you watch once with a gag ending into something I'll watch anytime it's on.

InCaptain America Civil War, war machine should've died from that fall. Or someone should've died.

No because that's a line you don't cross on same team. Even accidentally. Rhody getting injured is a consequence in line with what the MCU is doing.

Now someone should die in Infinity War part 1. The stakes have to be upped vs Thanos

It wasn't really a happy ending. Project Mayhem succeeded and it doesn't have it's leader anymore like in the book.
It also kept it from getting a movie sequel that was pretty awful.
