So finished Wool. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but the reviews of the second book have me pausing just a bit to read some fantasy again.

I feel like it's either Rothfuss or Moorcock.

Way of Kings is a bit too much for right now.

Should I look at one or the other?

So I finished The Name of the Wind, which was fantastic. Really. I hear the second book is pretty good, but not up to that.

So the quetion is, do I start Way of Kings, which I did get for Christmas... or do I go for the next Kingkiller? It seems I have some years to finish both (although Kingkiller's next should be this year or 2016), but still... I might read them at the same time depending on the density of Stormlight. Thoughts?

What did you end up choosing? I have tried to get into Way of Kings about 3 times now and couldn't do it. Finally finished Gardens of the Moon (Book 1 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen). I thought it was okay. The writing is unclear as hell to me and often just oozed inexperience and poor craftsmanship. Particularly the beginning.



About to start the Magicians, though I am not excited about books 2 and 3. Book 1 seems interesting, but the synopses of books 2 and 3 makes me very skeptical.



What I am excited about is:

The third and final book in the Raven's Shadow Series comes out July, 2015. (Blood Song, Tower Lord, and now, Queen of Fire). Author: Anthony Ryan

and

Book 4 in the Gentlemen Bastards Sequence comes out September, 2015 (The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Seas Under Red Skies, The Republic of Thieves, and now, The Thorn of Emberlain). Author: Scott Lynch

I believe these have all been recommended previously, but can't remember.

I really enjoy Brent Weeks' writing. It is fast-paced and not overly difficult, but the themes and characters are timeless and intricately drawn. Night Angel was terrific and the Lightbringer series is very enjoyable.

The Black Company books are unreal. Particularly The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and the White Rose (which are found in the Chronicles of the Black Company Omnibus). The Books of the South are not as good, but are still quite enjoyable. Cook is just damn good.

As I said in my previous post, I have read Gardens of the Moon and I really feel it lacks certain somethings, not the least of which is coherency. Some of the characters are interesting, but I am utterly lost as to the bulk of who they are, where they came from, and what the hell is going on. If book 2 is more grounded, then I can see why the series is so well thought of on this board. If not, I find it hard to understand why this series ranks among the great fantasy epics in recent history. It is certainly unique and interesting, but because it is not as coherent as it should be (imo), it is difficult to get into.

UPDATE PART I Don't Know What

So I just Finished Book One of the Stormlight Archives. That puts me in the middle of reading both Kingkiller and Stormlight which is ok.

Great read, but man did it drag in the final third until the big event. Sanderson is just painting epic upon epic in there. So many characters, ideas, etc. I really hope Book 2 starts a little bit faster.

But even with my radar squarely in the fantasy realm with book Kingkiller and Stormlight, I had to stop and pick up Mark Danielewski's new Book The Familiar. Part 1 is out now, Part 2 is out at the end of October. Danielewski's reads are fast and I can probably finish both before the end of November. He's planning 27 novels. I don't even know what to do with that information, but I'll read anything he puts out, and it automatically goes to the top of my list.

This thread keeps me motivated because there's so much to read. Anyways, awesome recommendations, as I'll probably go back to Kingkiller before Pools of Radiance.
