Let's talk Arrow season 4. What went wrong? (SPOILERS)

I actually like season 3, tbh.
But Season 4 was just a hot mess.
Dhark was never really fleshed out
His motivation was dumb and his method waaaaay excessive
Magic was just thrust in and not really questioned
Amanda Waller's exit was unceremonious and shitty
It seemed all season like:
"shite Happening
shite Happening
shite HAPPENING.
There it is, it has happened. Now we are done"
No development or cohesion.
And the Felicity/Oliver shite is just boring and irritating.

Same thing as season 3, Mark Guggenheim is the show runner.

Season 3 was straight up garbage so I thought season 4 was a nice comeback year. Yeah the finale was lame and kind of took away the work they put in to make Dahrk a decent villian all year, but it was a good enough season.

I actually enjoyed the League storyline.

I held on as long as I could after a terrible season 3 but when Black Canary was killed off I was done. Felecity was cool in the first season and half but a made up character shouldn't be the main character by season 4. Didn't watch the last few episodes don't plan on watching anymore.

I stuck with season 4 up until the episode felicity got out of the chair.
TLDR:
It's obvious that olicity killed any enjoyment in season 4. They open up season 4 with that grave tease without actually knowing who is in the grave. That was probably the dumbest thing they could have done. They obviously did that to try and draw viewers back in. It ended up doing the opposite when it started to become more clear who was in the grave.
The ridiculous "hacking" to fix every problem became a big issue in the show. Oliver can no longer solve any of his problems. I don't hate felicity as a character, but the writing and her arc this season made her extremely unlikable. Her mother is probably the worst character in all four seasons of the show. She adds absolutely nothing of value to the show.
Oliver (civilian) was much better as a playboy and revolving love interests than he was as domesticated Oliver. I actually really liked the direction season 4 was going in until the crossover. I started to get nervous with the way they had Felicity react to Oliver having a son. It showed how emotionally immature she really was as a character.
The thing that pissed me off the most about their relationship though was the fact that Oliver not once stood up for himself or tried to explain his point of view. He was only there to take Felicity's verbal abuse every time, and that's what it was. Their relationship is toxic and filled with immaturity.
They really ruined DD's character too. He had so much promise and build up early on only to under deliver once again. We didn't even get the slightest hint of his actually motivations or plan until episode 22? There really were some very good episodes and good characters (vixen) in season 4.
It was just mediocre overall. The writers and show runners don't know what they are doing and continuously up the stakes only to make them not matter an episode or two later (wheelchair, nukes, etc). I'm done with Arrow until they can make this show about a vigilante again. Oliver didn't even feel like the focus of the show for a good two thirds of the season. I'll be sticking to the onbenchnow synopsis until further notice.

Different version of the character. Point made though and she still is unbearable.

Season 3 wasn't good, but season 4 was worse. They both suffered from the same thing though, and is the forced Olicity drama. That crap got old in season 3, and was cranked up another notch in season 4. I could not careless about their relationship. And I sure couldn't care less about the drama between Felicity and her mom and her dad. This isn't a show called Felicity, it's called Arrow.
And like someone else said, when they killed off Laurel, just as they were actually making her character bearable, was freaking stupid as hell. As a comic book reader, the fact that they killed the Black Canary off before she can even make a name for herself was stupid.

Yes. How horrible and lazy by the writers/showrunners to back themselves into a corner where they thought this was a good idea?

Yeah this was also a fail by the writers. They never established any rules for the magic at all. Using magic itself wasn't a terrible idea (even though Amell himself claims getting away from the grounded nature of arrow led to the season suffering). It was all in the execution.

Canary will be back, I predict. No major character actually dies on this show. Just like all CW shows.
Sara was way more bad arse as Canary, anyway. It would have been awesome to crossover DC LoT just to have Sara revenge kill the shite out of DD.

Arrow needs more Constantine

Season 4 made me appreciate season 3 so much more.
3 was a drop off from 1&2, but 4 fell off a cliff

I agree with this, but you could see Laurel's character growing into the Canary and I was excited for where that was going. Sara was one of the standouts on LoT for sure.
Turning the Canary into a legacy character doesn't interest me on Arrow. I'm sure in the writer's room right now they are having conversations about turning Felicity into the next Canary.

To shorten my original answer, Felicity wasn't in the grave. That is what went wrong with season 4. This season, and the series as a whole, would've benefitted greatly if Felicity would've been the one in the grave instead of Laurel.

I would almost place bets on Laurel coming back somehow.
Explained away as "destroying the totem releases her soul" something something something resurrection.

I'm still hoping that the Flashpoint Paradox possibility that they setup in on the Flash might give them the opportunity to reset Arrow. They need a clean slate, and that is the only way I can think off that they could pull it off.
