The wife and I have been watching AHS Season 1 this week. (Yes, I know, it's at season 6 now. We just don't watch current TV shows very often because of what I call "The Carnivàle Effect". That is to say, I'm still pretty damned bitter about how "Carnivàle" ended and am reluctant to start a new show until I know it's going to last.) It's actually taken us multiple tries over the last year to get this far because, for a show with horrific murders, tantalizing mysteries, crazed ghosts, and Jessica Lange (easily the best thing about the show so far), it felt rather...dull over the first few episodes. But it's picked up a bit of steam over the middle third of the season, so we're finishing it off this weekend. I do have a couple questions going forward, though:

1) What later seasons would people recommend? Are any of them more -- for lack of a better word -- compelling than others?

2) In a related question, does it matter if they're not viewed in order? I understand the concept of an anthology show, but looking over the cast list reveals some actors appear in far more episodes than a single season would contain, so that raises the question of whether there's some sort of specific continuity taking place and whether a binging viewer would be best served watching the seasons the order they originally aired.

Thanks for any advice.

Asylum (Season 2, i think) was my favorite... Also liked Freakshow a lot..

The season with the witches (not sure what the title of the season was) and this last season, "Hotel", were my two least favorites.

Asylum. Beyond that, it's gotten worse and worse each year.

1st season was the best IMO. Freak show and hotel were too far out there for me to enjoy.

The first 11 episodes of Murder House are the best.

Asylum was a good season too and had a lot going on.

Coven had promise initially, especially with Kathy Bates' character, but after a while it was dull and honestly felt like a Lifetime show.

Dandy and Twisty were great in Freak Show. I rank this season as 3rd best but far behind Murder House and Asylum.

Hotel was probably the last AHS season I'll watch. 3rd straight season where I thought they had a good premise but fell short on the execution.

Twisty is the best character in the entire show and his episode that explains his back story is the best episode of the show.

I really enjoyed the homage paid to the horror genre in the Freakshow season.

Dandy was also great in Freakshow as the Psycho homage.

Watch 1. Season 2 is entertaining.

Coven is some of the worst shite to ever air on TV. Freakshow was pretty meh.

this show is terrible. If you're a horror fan, avoid like the plague. If you like musicals like glee, then have at it.

Thanks for the advice. Enough people have suggested season 2 that I think I can shelve the continuity question for now and just move on in the order they aired and see how that goes.

And if it gets too, um...Glee-like, we'll stop watching. Promise.

American Horror Story season 1 was great.
Season 2 was really dark and depressing. Too much rape.
I gave up on Season 3 midway through.
Season 4 was a decent comeback, with a couple of really scary bad guys. (Dandy, Twisty)
Season 5 was a mixed bag. There were a couple of great performances in it. But it never was that scary. The kink factor was kicked up big time, which was both good (Lady Gaga has an arse and a half) and bad (a man gets sodomized to death by a demon with a drill bit for a pecker).

Season 2 definitely went for the shock factor. But its downfall was throwing too much shite at the wall and they couldn't finish all the storylines effectively. It seemed like they realized this 2/3 of the way through the season and had to force the end of some of the plots.

Well, that's not promising. It's one of my biggest complaints about lots of TV shows. But, then, having their reach exceed their grasp is probably better than not reaching at all, so I guess it could be worse.
