This is the thread that we all join together as a community to observe the GOAT Doc.

If the musical score alone doesn't do anything for you then I hope you DIAF.

Tonight or tomorrow we observe Ep. 1 and run through the rest the next week or so as it's eight glorious episodes.

Just remember, Sherman was the superintendent at LSU in '39,(maybe? Don't know about title or any of that for sure because I am loaded and super pumped to watch this shite!), so yeah... There is that. Let's keep that as a running dialogue.

Ep. 1

Taken while loaded and pumped! Lego!

I've never seen this documentary before, which is pretty inexcusable considering my level of interest in the subject. I watched the first episode today. Very, very well done. I'm looking forward to the second.

The whole series is phenomenal. Research Shelby Foote at your leisure so you have a better understanding of how lucky we to have his opinions.

Ep. 2 discussion will begin sometime Monday? Maeby? I don't know, I'm winging it and half loaded

I bought Terrible Swift Sword at the used bookstore in the Raleigh/Durham airport a week ago or so. I finished it in three days. Phenomenal history. I am now eagerly anticipating the other two books in the series.

Watching now. I rotate between this and The Roosevelts almost every night. The music is so good and comforting. I usually get 20-30 minutes on and crash, them resume the next night.

Love this doc and have seen it many times. Lately it's been my go-to sleep show.
Also, pretty much everything KB is the shite.

It's a pretty well known fact that Ken Burns is a flaming liberal.

Oh that, well yeah... that being said I still greatly enjoy almost all his works

I would date say the majority of the television programs and movies discussed on this board are made by people with liberal ideology.

Were you expecting a pro-South Civil War series on PBS?

The only real sign of his liberal bias shows (for me) is that he focuses on white on black racism in just about everything that he does.

We will discuss this more and more, especially in Ep.5 when we get to the NYC draft riots

I mean...he normally covers topics before the 1960s and it's hard to cover any topic of interest and leave that stuff out

When you're watching a series on America's National Parks and it suddenly veers into an episode on blacks and the National Parks, you'll see my point.

Let us begin...

Ep. 1 The Cause -- 1861

The first episode of Ken Burns' documentary series examines slavery, causes of the war, and key roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Frederick Douglass and Ulysses S. Grant. The first states succeed from the union, Lincoln is elected president, William Tecumseh Sherman resigns as superintendent of the Louisiana Military Academy and heads north.

We'll also cover Bull Run, the first true battle of the war, In July 1861, the first battle of the war took place at Manassas, Virginia just across the Potomac from Washington. It proved to be a disaster for the North. The leader of the Army of the Potomac was a battle tested commander of the American-Mexican war from St. Bernard Parish, his name was P. G. T. Beauregard, he also led the assault against Fort Sumpter

Watched it every night back in its first run in a 1990, seen it several times since then. It never fails to move me, no matter how familiar it is to me by now. The recent frame-by-frame 4K transfer is stunning.

As for Ken Burns, my best friend is a documentary filmmaker. The greater doc community mostly resents Burns and his company Florentine Films because they soak up a huge percentage of the available corporate funding, but begrudgingly admit they do quality work. My friend once called Florentine out of the blue to request some information, was put on hold briefly a day Burns himself picked up to talk to him. They ended up conversing for close to an hour, which was pretty cool.
