Mark Hughes of Forbes does a great job of sorting through the rumors and mapping out how the film went from two Snyder films to one Snyder movie with a Joss Whedon final edit.

'Justice League' Rumors Spread Amid New Filming
quote:

I don't like unpacking and debunking every rumor that comes along, and I don't like the impression of calling "false" against other sites and sources. However, the Justice League rumors are extensive enough, and the situation surrounding the film unique enough, that I've spent a lot of time digging around for information about what's really going on, in order to offer what I think is an accurate picture of the real situation. That doesn't mean I'm claiming bad motivation on the part of any outlet or sources, merely that for whatever reason their information -- or their interpretation of it -- is faulty or wrong. Some elements are in a general sense correct or close enough to correct that it's not worth splitting hairs, but a lot of it is entirely wrong.

So, let's take it in supposed chronological order, from the rumor of previous major reshoots to the claim the film has been significantly changed all through production, then to the claim major reshoots are being done for several months, and finally to the overarching interpretation of these claims as meaning the film is being fundamentally changed and that the majority of it will be different (different from what, is itself an additional issue to talk about).

Justice League began as a two-film project, before it went into principal photography. But in the aftermath of negative critical reactions to Batman v Superman and the subsequent underperformance of that film at the box office, Warner became very concerned and began to seek ways to change the DCU's plans. One result of this extreme concern and desire for change was to alter the plans for Justice League -- it was changed from a two-film project to a single film, folding some elements from the second installment into the first story and eliminating a lot of other elements. Major rewrites were done, both to change the project and story into a single entity and to make it conform to evolving plans for the solo Batman series. These changes to the plans and the subsequent rewrites took place during pre-production and then some continued in the early weeks of main production.

Anyway, continuing our story -- in early 2017 after principal photography was completed, Zack Snyder began editing the film together and decided he needed some additional scenes. Joss Whedon was contacted about writing the scenes, and agreed to do it. These are new scenes, and they comprise the bulk of filming being done this Summer. Due to their heartbreaking family tragedy, the Snyders had to step away from Justice League, and Whedon was asked to step in to film the extra scenes he wrote and to do a final edit on the film.

In addition to the new scenes he's filming, Whedon will also do some pickups and reshoots typical of any film of this size -- it is tiring to have to constantly point out that every film like this includes scheduling for presumed reshoots that inevitably become necessary after principal photography ends, and every time it happens the press and fans react like it's a major surprise or signals some problem when it doesn't. It almost always happens, and there are almost always folks who misinterpret it or who say it's more extensive and meaningful than it necessarily is. Some reshoots will be for continuity due simply to the fact the new scenes exist and might require tweaking or altering some of the previous footage to be sure it all lines up properly.

Just going on DC's recent track record... yikes.

Sounds good to me . Hopefully final edit mimics wonder woman's pace and style .. that was a fun film .

Something between Wonder Woman and batman v superman would be awesome .

"Yikes"? What am I missing here?

It sounds like WB is moving in the right direction to un-Snyder JL. Or at least strengthen the areas of the film where Snyder usually falls short.
