I thought this movie would be good, but was overrated. It's vastly exceeded my expectations. Was anyone else surprised by the well executed cinematography and imagery effects and overall production in this movie?

All those things were hyped before release but I thought it was just that, hype.

Same cinematographer as Birdman, Gravity, and Children of Men, so that was one of the major hooks of the movie.

Liked gravity but maybe since I have parents in Wyoming and been to Yellowstone several times this movie resonated a lot more.

Leo better than Hardy

No he wasn't. Although Leo was great as usual, It was Leo being cold and beat up Leo. Hardy totally got into a different, unique character.

Watched this movie last night and thought it was great. The cinematography is fantastic. My pet peeve is that I am too familiar with where this movie took place. Ft. Kiowa is in modern day Chamberlain, SD. The real life events if this movie didn't take place in the Rocky Mountains but on the Plains of South Dakota. The setting should have been more like that of Dances With Wolves. Ft. Kiowa would look more like the camp Kevin Costner reclaimed. I just knew too much about the story. Looking at the movie standing alone, incredible.

It was superbly done, but I think that the excellent cinematography propped this movie up in so many people's minds. Well worth the watch, but the plot is lacking. Good, not great movie

I'll never get why people post on the internet as they watch a movie like this for the first time.

Turn off all the lights and get into the movie, man.

watched it for bear-rape scene but didn't see it.

the bear attack was definitely violent but did i miss something? i thought that was a big part of the controversy.

I had to drink 4 cups of coffee and run 5 lines of cocaine just to make it through the movie without falling asleep

im just saying Inaritu is so insanely self indulgent that he just HAD to set this in winter to ramp up the drama and extreme suffering ....when in fact it would never have happened that way

why not just tell the story honestly and let it speak for itself

its a classic example of "my ART is more important than telling a story"

every child knows bears hibernate for frick sake

Good movie. A very simple and direct plot. Beautiful to look at and I was surprised at how minimal the score was. Hardy and Leo nailed there roles.

Finally watched all of it last night. Caught it from the bear attack last week, which was a damn visceral scene. I'm glad Leo got his Oscar. That had to be a demanding role in an extremely well made movie.

*not really spoilers but

The last shot (where I guess you could say they broke the fourth wall) was kind of wonky and funny to me. It looked like Leo was asking "can I finally have my fricking award now?!?

It is a very nice movie to look at, the scenery is great. However, I made the mistake of watching this movie after a long day so I fell asleep quite a few times during.
