The show started kind of slow for me but now that I'm on episode 9, I'm really starting to like it. I just can't remember exactly why Jax's mom doesn't like him following his daddy's ideas. What was his daddy's plans?

They'll expand on that over time, though it comes and goes through the first several seasons as a plot focus.

They explain all of that off and on for the first two seasons. It gets real in S3 and S4.
