Did people know that Shelley Long wasn't coming back once the Season 5 finale aired, or was it one giant mystery leading up to Season 6? And once season 6 started was it set in stone that Diane was not returning or was it still up in the air?

I am actually glad she is gone because her character got on my nerves

I don't remember, but once Kirstie Alley came on the show, it all just died.

cant remember exactly, although I do think it was announced before the season finale. We knew well before the season began that Alley was slated to fill that role.

This was so pre-internet that the only news of this nature was either TV Guide and/or Entertainment Tonight

Pretty much agree. Sam was so pathetic in that goofy uniform. The show still had its moments, but the Diane years were much better.

ETA: The high point of the Rebecca years might have been when Sam first saw her. "Ummm-boooooah" or something like that.

It was announced that she wasn't returning before the next season IIRC.

I recall it as being known. She was more interested in pursuing movies and by the time it aired, most people knew. There was some talk of contract dispute stuff, but I remember she just simply stating she wanted to pursue more movies and not be steretyped as Diane.

It was well known Shelly was not coming back. Also, the ratings were still very high during Kirstie's run.

We knew before the season ended that it was her last.

We didn't have social media, but Entertainment Tonight was in full swing, as well as People Magazine. Both entities were huge at that time. You also had newspaper entertainment sections, TV Guide was in every home... Anyone with any interest in entertainment knew.

TV Guide was every kids bible. I remember my parents had a subscription and it would arrive a few days prior to that week of tv starting. Good stuff.

I didn't mind Alley, but never understood the whole Sam selling the bar to sail around the world. Stupid plot.
