But what does that have to do with the continuity between batman 89 and returns?

You have to remember this was what almost 25 years ago?

Ppl then expected the sequel to things to be BIGGER and more exciting than the first

Granted burton went over board a little on returns but was very subservient in the original to the character of batman and the story. While its clearly a burton style, it was a subdued burton style.

That is jmo

ETA: and like I said earlier, when a film made for 49 million grosses 411 million the studio is gonna give that director almost anything he wants to do in a sequel IMO

he was able to make Gotham more of his vision without much outside interference, not sure what's confusing you here

They're both good. But I like Batman more. Although Returns had Michelle Pfeiffer

There was a script for a sequel to Batman 89 that was basically a more direct sequel than returns. Vicky Vale was going to come back and it would've had a lot more of the themes and settings. I think the opening scene in the script involved some streetvendor selling pieces of the crashed Batwing. WB gave Burton more freedom for the sequel. Burton wanted to completely separate the next movie but he ultimately decided to do a "loose sequel."

Returns is a Tim Burton Ode to German Expressionism. Plus , Michelle Pfeifer in a cat suit!

Is that what it was? That's the last thing I want in my Batman.

Has Burton ever said what his plans would have been for a 3rd Batman?

Returns is a chore to watch at times as an adult. The Selina stuff outside of her going crazy is boring as are Walken's board meetings. It doesn't really step up until Catwoman blows up the building. The Bat, The Cat, and The...Penguin?

The hype machine behind Batman 89 was unreal. The lines for months by my theaters were unreal. A little off topic but i believe for the time period at least. That was actually one of the biggest box office take ins in a while. It had movies like Batman, Honey i shrunk the kids, Indiana Jones 3, Ghostbusters 2 etc. It was just a great year for summer blockbusters. Headed by Tim Burton's Batman.

I had a Batman bday party as a kid and we had Returns playing on loop while there were Batman themed games in the yard. My parents told me they had a surprise in my room and I walked in and saw a new Batman Returns bedspread.

Just found out Bale was the voice of Thomas in Dinsey's Pochantas. Mind blown.

I don't mind Burton's style at all in Returns. I love Gotham and the Penguin's army. The worst part of Returns is Catwoman and all her cheesy arse lines.
