I'm not sure whether this should be posted in the OT or Movie/TV Board, but are the characters (John Goodman, Steve Zahn, etc) based after real people in New Orleans? If so, is Steve Zahn's character that big of an insufferable douche in real life?

What are your thoughts on the show? I can never tell how accurately portrayed some of these shows are.

Why wouldn't this be a movie/tv board topic?

Steve Zahn's character is "inspired" by musician Davis Rogan, apparently. I have no familiarity with Davis Rogan.

John Goodman's character is based on blogger Ashley Morris, who died in 2008. I don't remember reading the blog, but I remember when he died - it was big news, locally.

yes, should be on Movie/TV board...in fact there was a discussion about the show a little while back that would have been found with a search...

here is what I told the person that asked the what the board's thoughts were on the show after the poster finished season one and questioned whether to continue watching:

quote:

basically the rest of the show is like this...

character walks down street while stepping over debris from a house that is being rebuilt/torn down and says - "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

he then goes to a bar with a band...

black folk sew costumes to pretend they are Indians, and tell each other "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

they all go to another character's bar with awesome band

another character walks down the street with a friend and instruments for some reason and friend gets shot - other character cries a little bit and says ""there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

then she goes to a bar with her instrument and plays...

teenage girl is a trouble maker and whorish and does drugs...mom says to her "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

mom and daughter go to bar and listen to music...

a murder investigation is sort of going on with police who look at each other and say "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

another character has absolutely no song writing skills or world skills but since he owns lots of music and knows every dump in the city that someone took a dump he expects to get paid lots of money because he believes that "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

he goes to lots of bars and listens to lots of bands

another character believes that $50 - $75 "creole and Cajun food" in a restaurant is the most important thing in the world, and also wants to make a certain drink and certain dishes in her restaurant that captures the essence of New Orleans and she says "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

she goes to bars and listens to bands

all the characters go to "Carnival" a.k.a. Mardi Gras but everyone is this city says Carnival because "there is something about this city, (deep breath) , nothing like it!"

the end...

The real guy was on some Anthony Bourdain show once and he came across as a douche.

Isn't the chick chef supposed to be Susan Spicer?

I remember that. And Goodman was, like he is in everything else, one of the best parts of the show.

On a side note: I met Goodman in town once. He's a very nice and legitimately cool guy.

I've never met him, but people I know who have are fairly universal in their positive reports of his being nice and approachable. And there is no question he loves New Orleans and Louisiana.

Absolute false and it's not even close.

The pilot episode of kville is the worse pilot in the history of television. And I will defend that until I die.

That summary is spot on, but it should have a bit of a disclaimer about being as boring as paint drying.

"nothing interesting happens in this town, but there is just something about this city."

"random scene of guy walking down the street playing a trumpet"

The gunshot victim makes it appear like something happened on the show which is a blatant lie.

I loved the fact that Steve Earle had such a good role on there. Great series...

Yep. Davis is based off of Davis Rogan. I have never met him, but the people I know who have say that he's an unapologetic a-hole.

Goodman's character is based on blogger Ashley Morris who died of a heart attack in 2008, per Wikipedia.
