Just got an Apple TV. (I'm late to the party) What do I do with it?

I know I can now watch ESPN3 games. That's the main reason I wanted it, that and HBO GO.
What else is it good for?

I like to mirror my screen from my computer or phone.
There is a YouTube app built in, but it's much easier to just find it on my phone and then click the mirror button. I can also take advantage of Amazon Prime this way, even though there is no app for Apple TV.
The newest generation of Apple TV has a ton of apps and games too. I recently got it to replace my older gen model. I'm still trying to figure out what else to load on it.

I mostly use it to mirror what's on my computer to my living room tv. You can pretty much find any tv show in good quality online.
I also have a ton of music on my computer that's not accessible through stuff like spotify or Amazon music. It pulls everything from iTunes and puts it on your tv, which is great since I have a great theater system that carries throughout my house.
Other than that, it's got most of the apps every other smart tv or device has. But for me, it's all about the first two things I listed.

Like they say, anything is a dildo if you're brave enough. Give it a shot.

If you have kids, you can give away any hope of utilizing your router for much else.

It is 2017, and Apple TV still doesn't have the Amazon app?
Wow.

Apple and Amazon have competing devices, which is why there currently isn't one. However, there was an announcement that an Amazon Prime is coming soon.

Can you sideload the Roku with Kodi?

The Fire TV box is far and away the best streaming device out there for the money.
Nvidia's shield is the best if you care about 4k gaming and streaming.

Tim Cook announced at WWDC last month that Amazon Prime is finally coming this year. I sold my Fire stick on the strength of his word. Then again, I bought my ATV4 on the rumor in late 2015 that it was coming. Dammit, this time, I'm going to be right! It's all about your time horizon.

Why buy an ATV at all?
There are endless possibilities when you purchase a Fire TV Box or Stick.

Airplay if you have apple devices.

I only had the stick for comparison, but I didn't like (a) the Amazon-centric interface, (b) limitation of wireless networking, (c) lack of IR support for the remote. I was able to work around (c) through use of my WMC remote, Autohotkey, and the Android debug program adb to translate IR into TCP/IP commands, but it was so slow as to be nigh unusable. The latency was like a second between pressing a button and performing the action. ETA: Unlike most companies, Amazon doesn't deign to publish IR protocols for its devices, so you're left using adb. In fact, Amazon encrypts communication from its remote app to the device, so you can't even spy on it to reverse engineer. Very user-hostile in that respect.
While Bluetooth, the ATV4 does still support IR, so I'm not tied to its mostly dismal remote. They did improve it a lot when they made the touchpad require a click before acting on swipes. I actually like it a lot for scrubbing around videos.
I'm not into jailbreaking stuff, installing Kodi, etc, so that's not a consideration.

If you have kids, start buying movies that come with a digital copy and upload them to your iTunes. It's very easy to pull up all their movies and watch them through the appletv. I no longer have to mess dvds and the DVD player.
