In other words, the pretentious, self-important ones.

This is what people say about movies when they don't get/understand them.

How about picture show?

People in the business call it a "picture."

The term "film" is commonly applied to movies of an artistic or educational nature not expected to have broad, commercial appeal.
Right, like "stag films."

This is what people say when a severly flawed arthouse movie they love for some reason gets ripped apart and have no response to the original criticisms.

Actually, none of that was going on. When some people see a special interest/arthouse type movie that they don't get or maybe that they do get and don't like the message, they call it pretentious. I've heard people call Kubrick's FILMS pretentious. I've also heard people say Lynch's Eraserhead is pretentious. Pretentious? No. Not for you? Yes.

This is how people dismiss justified and fair criticisms of their favorite movies.

There are good artistic movies. And there are bad ones. For instance, Drive was a good one, and The Tree of Life was a bad one (my opinions of the two, of course). I can "get/understand" a movie and still dislike it.

ETA: Eraserhead is a movie I dislike and don't get.

I definitely classify those as more films than movies.

New rule. If Patrick_Bateman likes a film/movie its considered a movie. If he hates it or finds it pretentious and artsy, it is considered a film. We must ask him every time for clarification.

Touche. Haha the opposite is true for me with those movies. Like you said, your opinion. Completely fair. Honestly one movie that I watched recently rubbed me, personally, as being a little pretentious. That movie was Adaptation. Charlie Kaufman was actually supposed to write a script for the Orchid Thief, instead he made it all about himself basically. Still a good movie but at first glance I thought the idea of it was pretentious. I just think sometimes people use the "P" word a little too soon.

Also, no one can blame someone for not getting Eraserhead. A second viewing and maybe some research is required to understand it.

Exactly what I was getting at. I just hate when someone says "well you just didn't get it".

re: Just Call It a Movie

Well, I prefer to call it a god damn film. Not to be pretentious or anything, its just the term I prefer. I don't go out and correct people who call them movies. Seems like you're the one who's being pretentious.

Fair enough. It doesn't really matter. . . I was lashing out at my self-proclaimed film expert boss (who - oh, by the way - doesn't know shite about movies or how they're made), who had to go into great detail about his film expertise and intellect at lunch today. Needless to say, most everyone at the table thinks he made a fool of himself and came off as a pretentious ass.

I'm over it now, though. Not mad anymore.

re: Just Call It a Movie
I don't think it makes any difference. I feel it's pretentious to point out the subtle difference between movies and films that most people don't know about anyway.
