Oh snap!

Ok, so where are the EU diehards that swore up and down that the sequels would fail if Disney ignored the books?

Lucasfilm have announced that, from this day forth, their Expanded Universe is going to consist only of things that tie directly into the core, official canon of Episodes I-IX and the animated shows, The Clone Wars and Rebels

So something like KotOR isn't considered canon, but those stupid animated shows are?

I can see why they did that, it just isn't accessible to a wide audience but outside of a few of the books The video games have had superior stories to almost every single piece of Star Wars properties. Dark Forces I/II, Jedi Knight (Kitarn is a great meld of Skywalker and Solo), KOTOR, etc.

It's an understandable move, but please, then just at least make those stories.

This is a good move IMHO.

First, neil stephenson explains the difference between the first and 2nd trilogy and why they were looked down upon by many.
LINK

2nd, the EU contradicted itself in several places that I read. Impossible to keep straight.

3rd, I hope they keep Thrawn though.

What does that mean for casual fans such as myself?

Not using material from the books?

It means when the movies come out we'll have the GoT effect with 15 threads:

Star Wars 7 Thread for Noobs
Star Wars 7 Threads For Book Nerds
Star Wars 7 Thread for Video Game Geeks
Star Wars 7 Thread for T-Shirt Owners
Star Wars 7 Threads for Hodors
Star Wars 7 Thread for Non-Hodoring Medium Nerds
Etc.

It means nothing to us. I know that there's a girl named Jade that Luke won't hook up with now but that's about it.

Why would Lucas/Disney use characters that weren't created by Lucas and have to owe royalties to those writers? I don't know why it was even a question ever that the EU would be ignored.

I sound fairly passionate about this subject for some reason but I'm really not.

People who thought the EU would be factored into the new movies were completely delusional.

Sucks because Mara Jade was cool as shite.

Assassin for the emperor who's mission is to kill Luke eventually becomes a badass Jedi who marries Luke.

There were some significant threads that proved useful.

And at least for the games, those were made by LucasArts, who was a big studio for a bit. I'm not sure how ownership worked there.

Not ignored, mined for ideas maybe.

I mean I never thought they would BUILD off of the EU, but there is a lot of good content to use. If Disney treats this like Marvel's and let's them make a billion dollars building something unique, then this is less scary.

That options not necessarily off the table either but I doubt we see direct translations of any EU character.

I would think a good legal team could take a character that they want to use and direct them on exactly what to change so they can't successfully be sued by an EU creator.

Star Wars should adopt a more Star Trek-like approach to canon. The novels should be extensions of the movies, and not constrain the films, or even other novels.

They did. But Lucas retracted his earlier statements and made a prequel trilogy roughly 20 years into the EU.

The EU "responded" by incorporating what was in the prequels and working from there.

Then based off of LucasArts the EU was allowed to bring in video game material.

So is the current kind of EU stories effectively ended today?

EU creator

Is legally Lucas. Which is why I've been wondering if/why Disney didn't' buy the rights to reference EU characters if they would like.
