Haven't seen it, but you're the first I've heard say it was actually good. The Lion King is still my favorite.
95% on RT with an audience liked % of 90 and a Metacritic score of 81.
I really enjoyed to movie and thought the songs were great.

I love Moana, but I don't think it's close to the best. Animation is stunning, songs are great but the plot is heavy-handed in parts. Disney has developed a tendency to force moments that show "This character is clumsy" or "this character is confused" instead of letting it flow naturally from the character themselves.
And the story is a bit overly simple, in large part because Moana's "character growth" feels manufactured. She doesn't really grow as a character in any way.

No, The Jungle Book is Light Years better

Not even. It was a decent flick but nothing about it stood out in my mind unlike Frozen as far as recent disney kids films went.

The animated Beauty and the Beast is probably the best animated Disney feature film ever made.
More recently I have liked Tangled the most. Frozen was good but Hans as the surprise reveal villain was forced and really unnecessary in my opinion. Frozen was carried by the strength of its songs and voice acting, the story really was sort of subpar.
ETA: If we are counting Pixar films, most really outpace Disney Animations Studios. I would put all three Toy Story's, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, above almost anything Disney has come out with. Toy Story 3 is my favorite as it mixes a great story with nostalgia, humor, and quite a bit of 'darkness' in its plot.

Animation was amazing, story was sub-par (Zootopia was better), songs were meh (people like them because of Miranda, but singing rap doesn't make a song good). Maui is a good character, the crazy grandma, the Dad, the best animal friend disappears, etc., etc.
Just because it was beautiful doesn't make it the best ever, it doesn't even make it good.

Tangled just does not get enough love.
Tangled was absolutely fantastic!
Moana - I guess recency bias is the reason this thread even exists.... not a top shelf movie.
Fun, not great.
Tangled, Frozen, Mermaid, Lion King, Aladdin, Nemo, Toy Story 1 & 3, Beauty and Beast (original), and Big Hero 6 is a QUICK TOP 10 I popped off my head.
All far better than Moana, and I trust by this time next year, no one would ever be crazy enough to suggest otherwise....

No. It doesn't hold a candle to Aladdin, Lion King, etc...
But it was absolutely fantastic and I recommend anyone watch it

The main character really didn't grow. She grew the village and her people, but she seemed to be the same person from the beginning, just with more experience.
Tell me that doesn't accurately describe the attitude of a lot of people under 25 right now

Emperors New Groove is GOAT
Not GOAT, but easily the most underrated Disney movie ever. It still holds up very well today. I'm on the floor every time I watch it.

The Emperors New Groove is a true Disney animated comedy, which there are very few of. Spade, Goodman, Puddy, vintage Catwoman made for a great slapstick film. Very underrated.

The problem for Tangled was it was released in a banner year for animated films, many which were from big franchises or spawned new franchises. Despicable Me, Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek part 15, etc. It was a great film lost in the middle of other very good or great (Toy Story 3) films.

Haven't actually seen it, but I want to ask a couple honest questions for honest feedback: 1) Does a movie require a villain to be good? Or is it just this movie specifically that you think requires require one? 2) how is gaining more experience different from growth for a character? They sound the same to me.

You think it was better than the old classics?
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Winnie the Pooh
Bambi
Fantasia
Jungle Book
Aristocats
Lady and the Tramp
Or the newer classics?:
Aladdin
Lion King
Little Mermaid
Pocahontas
Wow. Really? Come now, dude, get serious.

Looks like every other Disney movie since Little Mermaid.
It's "okay."

I just watched it last night with little Bandit and I thought it was really good.
Some of the best animation I have seen, the water elements were incredible.
The music really made the film, it was extremely well done.
The end scene when she is walking in slow motion was absolutely incredible.

Is Moana the best? No way. But it is really good. I watched it with my 2 year old. Loved the theme of courage and love. The musical numbers were nice. Dawanye Johnson as Maui was very good.

Nothing beats this. Kurt Russell and Dean Jones, together, in the same film? Oh, man!
