Is Mission Impossible 2 Hans Zimmer's worst work?

MI2 popped up on my Netflix yesterday so I gave it go for the first time in probably ten years. Obviously the movie is laughably bad but I was surprised to see that Zimmer wrote the atrocious score for this movie.

Just awful and in a huge Zimmer fan

Definitely my least favorite of them.

Zimmer has had some stinkers over the years. His Pearl Harbor soundtrack is largely a carbon copy of the soundtrack he did for The Thin Red Line three years earlier.

But then he'll put out something like Interstellar or Inception which are both fantastic works. Blackhawk Down is arguably his best work.

I don't think he's a great comic book scorer. Nolans batman movies weren't terrible, I just think Elfmans score for the Burton movies was more "Dark Knight"y. Gladiator is another solid work and very different from his normal hardcore brass sounds.

His Best: Inception

His Worst that I've heard: Divergent

I still thought there were some good score moments in MI2 even though the movie was shite. Like this scene: LINK Until it gets into the electric guitar.

I think you just proved carson's point with that link

I do think inception and interstellar are his best. Some moments in man of steel were great, though some felt off

Probably. I enjoy a powerful score, personally. To each his own.

This. Zimmer has some really great scores - Last Samurai, Crimson Tide, Backdraft, Days of Thunder, and some others. Heck if you ever isolate the Broken Arrow score, that's actually a rad composition.

However, and especially lately, he's been fairly crappy outside of Inception, TDK, select MoS bits, and 12YAS. He's gotten away from what makes him great, and relies far too much on thumping action scores. For instance, there are some really intense pieces in Man of Steel actually, but overall, forgettable. He didn't build enough and most of the tracks fall flat.

Sadly, it's seemed his best work is behind him.

Meh. He has a load of bad scores, but maybe out of big action movies, yeah.

Pirates Of The Caribbean is also a direct copy of Gladiator. Zimmer is overrated IMO. He's good but nowhere near Williams in any way like some people claim. Zimmer has been extremely lazy at times.

lol nice troll. John Williams is notorious in instrumental circles for ripping off the Stars Themes from Chopin, Korngold, and Dvorak just for starters.

And THEN he turned around and simply rearranged some of the notes from his main star wars themes to create the Superman theme (and to a degree the Indiana Jones theme).

Probably the most succinct explanation of Zimmer's work.

Have you ever played an instrument? Just asking.

Yes. Several. And in multiple types of bands etc. Thanks for asking.
