I'm Watching a SNL Episode From 1978 and They Don't Mention Politics Once

I just watched the Carrie Fisher episode from season 4. Compare that to today where 75% of the content is political. They went an entire Weekend Update without talking political figures. The writing was much sharper back then too. It's not even that I'm watching with rose colored glasses because these episodes precede "my era of SNL".
On a side note, the episode had the song Brandy from Guardians.

Snl nowadays is lazy writing and picking low hanging fruit political humor. But the number one rule is that they must insult and mock republicans.

It's starting to get to me how much politics is just everywhere. Completely unavoidable. Ruining conversations, television, etc. It's annoying.

I can't stand when people randomly insert politics where there was no place for it. Someone sees a kid having a temper tantrum. "That kid is behaving like our president".

Well the election was in 1976 so Ford was mid term and the political climate was not as charged as it is now

In those days, comedians didn't simply attack conservatives in order to attack them. There had to be some reason, such as a scandal or some stupid public statement.
That idea started dying with Jon Stewart -- I recall seeing some awards show where Russell Brand simply said over and over how stupid George Bush is, no real jokes... and kept getting huge applause every time.
The old ways completely disappeared with PDJT, who is the left's anti-Christ. Insult Trump first, and worry if it's funny later

104.5 had one of the weekend update hosts on last week. Interesting interview, the Zone host asked him about how hard it is to chastise the left on SNL.
The example he gave was on a joke that they decided not to do after Hill's list of things that cost her the election:
1. Russians
2. Comey
3. Mysogyny
4. The fact that she had to use her real name and personality.
That's our cutting edge, fearless comedy today.

This just in. Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
There were sketches in almost every show in the early seasons about how dumb Gerald Ford was.

I believe SNL has done impressions of every president since at least Carter.
It used to actually be a great way to see how pop culture saw the current president.
But I get your point. Those skits were far and few between.

More like the MSM on both sides. Every single aspect of our life now has a left or right viewpoint and it's pretty horrible.

While true that everything is either left or right, most of the major media outlets are liberal

THEY HAD PRINCESS LEIA in 1978!!!!
Carter was the President. How "funny" was Carter? Hell they probably didn't really know him yet? I don't really recall who their first good presidential impression was?
But I would assume in 1978 having Carrie Fisher would lean a bit heavy on Star Wars.

The mid 70's political climate was extremely charged - most political historians agree it was a highpoint of toxicity and violence. There was just a greater separation between politics and popular culture. And much of what pitiably passes for "comedy" these days is pure, straight, Left wing propaganda.

They had lots of bits with Ford, Carter (the one where he is talking down a guy on drugs and is very conversant with the lingo is kinda a classic), Regan, etc.
I think it's just now that people are so partisan that people on the right think everything is an attack on them and people on the left think conservatives are out to institute an authoritarian regime.

this is dumb. Jimmy Carter was President in 1978. Dan Aykroyd was Carter in almost every episode that I recall, especially the GIANT Jimmy who was at three mile island when it blew...
And OMG they made fun of a Democrat President...OMG what in the world did the liberals do back then...
ya'll take about how much "politics" is in everything now...you know why? Cause the media spoon feeds you what you want to hear (on either side of the debate) and lemmings drink it up and blame the other side for everything
UGH
