Just saw the trailer for new Clooney move Money Monster and all I could think about was the terrible...terrible American accent by the hijacker guy. It's such a terrible attempt at a working class NY accent by yet another Brit/Aussie/Irish etc. I also just watched Black Mass and Joel Edgerton's Boston accent turned him into a cartoon character by the end of the movie...it's all I could think about when watching him. Cumberbatch was also just as terrible. These regional accents are difficult for American actors, let alone non-American actors. You have to be a total master to do them and it's become a huge distraction for me as more and more non-American actors take these movie roles. Sorry, just something that I really noticed lately and it's been really bothering me.

It's not worse than the terrible Southern accents that yankees somehow think pass for realistic

Totally agree, every southern accent sounds like they watched Gone WithThe Wind and said...yep that's how it's done!

They took our jerbs!

But it is kind of annoying. Was anyone worse than Jax in Sons of Anarchy?

I had to go to a stupid play in London when I was doing a study abroad at Oxford. It was a pretty awful play and at one point, they have W Bush on the phone. It was the worst impersonation I've ever seen by far.

Hard to tell seeing as he didn't have dialogue in the last season.

He would just stare at someone and then say a name all raspy and slow.

Jemma.

Tera.

I'm not against foreign actors in these parts, I just want them to do the accent correctly. The worst is anytime Ray Winstone does an American accent...it just sounds like a jumbled mess.

What was worse, those accents, or Robert Downey Jr's British accent from the Sherlock Holmes movies?

British actors are a 100x better doing American accents than Americans are trying British accents. Sorry. That's a fact.

Americans can't even do American accents most of the time.

A long percent of British actors have to do American accents to be successful in Hollywood. I am sure there is a sizable portion of American actors that can nail a British accent but just never have too.

Yeah never mind. I just remember the departed

It took me a minute to get over Spacey's accent in House of Cards, I don't notice it as much now.

I could not agree with this more. I an constantly amazed at the number of British actors who do flawless American accents, just as I am dumbfounded by how few Americans can do a British accent even remotely well.

The perfect example are actors like Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, David Harewood, or Andrew Lincoln, just to name a few.

Not a movie, but Martin Freeman in Fargo was pretty spot on. Old roommate's parents were from Bemidji, MN and I can tell you that Freeman did a whole heckuva darn good jahb.

This. But like another guy said, they pretty much have to do american accents in Hollywood. Americans arent asked as much to do British accents so most don't work at it

I was talking about the guy who hijacks the tv station Clooney is on. It seems like he's trying to do a working class NYC accent, but it's just awful. I think the actors name is Jack O'Connell.
