The only thing thing that isn't perfect about this movie is l like my werewolves to walk on two legs but that's a silly complaint.

Werewolves are by far my favorite monster and there are so few even OK werewolf movies.

I've thought a lot of what it means to be each type of monster and I always picture werewolves to be man's base instincts and this movie captures it perfectly

Also, I don't mean to add it as an afterthought but for a horror movie, the acting is great and fantastic character development

The howl of the werewolf is still scary. I'm watching it now and I'm literially getting chills down my back when it howls.

I have the hots for Nurse Price. Fricking smoke show

Jack's makeup is fricking disgusting/great

Great movie. Early to mid-80's was a great time for flicks that mixed comedy/horror/sci-fi.

One of my all-time favorites. John Landis used to be such a great director. I was done with him after Beverly Hills Cop 3, though. Dear Lord that movie was hot garbage.

I think the wolf howl in that moving is the best, makes your skin crawl when you hear it.

Great movie.

Dark comedy with a good story line, strong acting, and great special effects.

I think a lot of Blade Runner - and I still think it is the best "in camera" special effects film in history (Ridley in his prime AND Doug Turnbull - just masterful).

Having said that - An American Werewolf In London is probably the best practical effect ("in camera") horror film. The film has aged fairly well and the effects even better.

The restraint used, overall, and the light touch by Landis both in writing and directing make this one stand out (in a year that also saw The Howling and Wolfen). David Naughton seemed poised on the edge of superstardom - he was in 2 films that became cult classics of that era, this one and Midnight Madness (an incredibly fun bad movie that introduced us both to Michael J. Fox and Peewee Herman).

We had more studios back then so instead of 2 movies with the same stories we had 3 back then.

I remember liking all 3, but American was awesome. Werewolves then out of the blue mutant Zombie Nazis.

Oh and it also wins because of Jenny Agutter.

A favorite of mine too.

Unnerving horror story. The pub scene is just very creepy and unsettling. His waiting in the apartment, trying to keep himself occupied and distracted, with bad moon on the rise playing on the soundtrack is just great. It goes on and on. And you are just waiting along with him...wondering...hoping...fearing.

When the guy is being chased in the tube...scary chase scene. Creepy, alone, deserted tube station and a matter of life and death.

And the ghost of his friend...my God that was scary. Especially when he suddenly appeared in the bathroom.

Great movie.

I had forgotten that movie. It's when all the teams compete in some sort of scavenger hunt, right. I used to rent it from Curtis Mathes every week.

Speaking of The Howling, Rick Baker was supposed to do the effects for that, but was stretched too thin and backed out to do An American Werewolf in London. I guess his team lead by someone else still did the Howling and both were nominated for Oscars the same year.

I think Werewolf has held up better, though I'm nostalgic for any early 80s horror movies, probably because my dad would always take me to see them even though I may have only been 5 or 6. Somewhat amusing story. I was watching The Howling this past Halloween season at 1 or 2 in the morning. My 3-year-old daughter moseys into the living room just as it started. Watched the whole thing with me and didn't even consider being scared. The 1st time the wolf changed, she said "that's not real, Daddy. He's just in a costume." Kids are so damn jaded today.

For modern (I.e anything besides the old universal Lon Chaney wolf man movies) werewolf movies, I think only the howling is better than American werewolf

I always wondered how he got out of the apartment without trashing it after he changed.

Well, he becomes an animal. Animals are more graceful than people so it'd make sense he didn't "trash" the place. Did he close the window after opening it earlier in the day?

What I want to know is why his family didn't immediately fly out to London when they learned he was in a coma.
