Great book and it adds a ton of depth to the story. Re-watching the movie, I ended up getting way more into it.

One of the best movies of 2015, and they did a great job adapting the book.

the book definitely makes the dramatic moments feel more tense.

When you have to fit so much into 2 hours, a lot of the tense moments are shortened.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie even more after reading the book. It was a quick read too, I couldn't put it down.

I read the book before watching the movie. The book was much better because they had to cut out too much for the movie. His "space pirate" joke in the movie doesn't even make sense because they cut out the part where he screwed up the radio and lost his connection to Earth. The trip lost a lot of its tension since there was no storm to not be able to warn him about.

You can say there was a sort of tension swap because I didn't feel much tension in the book when they had to pull Mark from the MAV to the Hermes.

I agree with you there. The ending of the book was pretty anti-climatic. It was great how they changed it, but still managed to incorporate his Iron Man joke.

So the Iron Man part wasn't in the book? I disliked that part a lot, went a bit too far trying to add action to the movie. It didn't need it.

Read the book then saw the movie. Book >>> movie.

How rewatchable is it for those that have seen it again?

Spoilers

Mark Watney suggest the Iron Man technique in the book like he does in the movie; however, it wasn't used in the book.

The only thing I liked about the book moreso than the movie was the fact that he was a mechanical engineer in the book, and botany was his secondary MS. So it made some of the stuff he was able to Macguyver a little more believable than him just being really handy as he was portrayed in the film. Cutting the storm and other stuff I could see being done for time constraints.

Spoiler: In the book when recounting the rescue, Watney says when they make the movie the whole crew will be standing around giving out hugs and stuff... which is exactly the way that scene takes place in the movie.

Sounds better because him mentioning it was funny, actually doing it was dumb.

Agree with both of those. The movie glossed over some really important shite. Which is understandable, but there was way more in the book that happened, or happened differently. One of the biggest obstacles in the book was the journey to the MAV and the storm, and that was about five minutes max in the movie. And what it crazy is that it was still a pretty long movie anyway.

I read the book first, which is rare for me, since I generally don't like reading, but for whatever reason I knew I would really like the book. And I've read it twice now. And I remember talking on here about how I can't wait for the movie to come out so I could be all uppity and be like "Meh, the book was WAY better." And then I saw the movie and it was actually true.

Long story short, I enjoyed the movie but not as much as I wanted to. And it glossed over most of the major obstacles of the book.

They did a really good job adapting the movie. There were a few minor differences, but nothing that really took away from the overall experience.

The best thing the movie did better than the book was to make sure Sean Bean's character was on the Council of Elrond..again

Never read the book, but I did re watch the movie. Watched it when it first came on HBO, maybe 7 or 8 months ago. Caught it again a couple weeks ago. I enjoyed it just as much the second time.
