I know how much this board likes this movie, but it was a bit painful to get through for me. I eventually fell asleep about halfway through.

Should I try again?

Took me three tries.

It's a decent film, but I wouldn't try watching it tired.

I think it's a time and place movie. I watched it for the first time ever a few days ago and while it was mildly entertaining, I didn't just love it like everyone else in the world seems to.

Yeah I knew it was a huge cult classic going in, but I'm not understanding the love for it.

Keep in mind, I really enjoyed other Coen movies like O Brother, Old Country, and Fargo.

Amazing to me that some people don't like this movie, but.....at least it's an ethos.

Truthfully, it is a movie that improves with the second watch. There are hardly any movies like this, but the humor is found once you stop trying to follow the plot, which is basically entirely throwaway.

The humor is subtle and quick and often not slapstick or dumb. Watch it again.

Watched it one time and thought it was the dumbest thing ever

Watched it again later a few months down the road and thought it was one of the funniest frickin movies id seen. It's just one of those things

Napoleon Dynamite

I walked out of that movie 20 minutes in. I rewatched it a few times since it grew on me.

I watched it when it was released and didn't care for it. Gave it another shot a few years later and I think it is one of the most well-written films ever made. Possibly the greatest comedy of all time.

at this point, it has been totally hyped to the point where you cant really avoid being let down. Sort of like Breaking Bad. A lot of people probably feel like they are missing something when they watch it, but don't want to be called an idiot for not absolutely loving it. Take this thread for example; nobody can really justify why it is so good, just that it is. I don't necessarily disagree with them, but I think it is fair to say that at this point, it is almost impossible to watch this film without a certain level of expectations.

I personally think it is pretty funny. The plot is pretty dumb, but it is really just a medium for the characters and dialogue. Goodman was top-notch.

I suppose the you could sum it up by saying, this is a movie with tons of quotable lines; if you have already heard all of the quotable lines (which at this point, you likely have), the enjoyment might diminish. Someone above mentioned Napoleon Dynamite, which I think is a more extreme example of this very thing. If you knew that boy had tots in his pocket from the beginning, or that Uncle Rico could throw the football over those mountains, there wouldn't be much to keep you in your seat.

Not a fan of The Big Lebowski. I'll never understand why people love that movie.

Not unlike Napoleon Dynamite, it's best if you forget the hype and let it stand on it's own.

The first time I saw Lebowski a friend had talked incessantly about how funny it was. I was let down.
