I watched Gladiator for the 1000th time and it hit me "he is a famous general and the right hand man of Caesar. He is on his own land and he gets picked up and becomes a slave." How can someone just pick him up from his property and force him into that?

Short answers:

1) Commodus was kind of a dick.

2) It's not like most people would recognize him by sight as being the great general Maximus, especially on the fringes of the Empire.

3) He wanted to die anyway when first enslaved so he made no effort to tell people his identity.

4) If word would have gotten out that he was alive, he would have been killed.

You watched it 1,000 times and never figured it out? Every day sounds like a struggle for you.

If he had told anyone who he was he would've been killed and he was on the fringes of the empire so people didn't recognize him.

Would you recognize the top American generals if they were in plain clothes and dirty? Most wouldn't

Rome was a precarious place where you could go from power to dead in no time. From proconsul to proscribed so to speak.

I'm pretty sure that's why Julius Cesar himself refused to disband his army but chose to come home at their head. They got him in the long run anyway of course.

Well yea as soon as Caesar disbanded his army and gave up power he would've had the shite sued out of him by all the powerful people of Rome

He was almost dead when he arrived at his plantation. He was picked up by looters/poachers and had a severe infection of some sort on his arm, making him delirious.

More importantly, they didn't have facebook back then so no one knew what he looked like.

Are you not entertained?

The Roman county appraisal distirct wasn't established until a few years later, so there was no way to confirm who lived at that house. The slave owner just thought he was a drifter and saw him as a revenue stream. He didn't care who he was.

Joaquin Phoenix wanted to be emperor, but Joaquin's dad, the emperor, wanted to make Russell Crowe the emperor because his son, Joaquin Phoenix, was a real screw up who was horny for his own sister. When Joaquin found out his dad, the emperor, had plans to bypass him in favor of Russell, he killed his dad, then had some goons rape Russell's wife and crucify her and her son. Once Joaquin accomplished this, he had Russell Crowe arrested and imprisoned to serve as a gladiator.

He didn't want him to become emperor, he wanted Maximus to abolish the role of Caesar and return full governmental power to the senate.

Not quite. Maximus would have to be emperor before abolishing the role. Therefore, Marcus Aurelius wanted Maximus to become emperor (presumably by adoption, although the movie doesn't discuss this) and then relinquish his power and abolish the role of "Caesar".

I think we would have been regent, but not going to argue semantics. We're more or less on the same page.
