How do you like your movie endings?

The thread below about a movie being open to interpretation got me thinking. Do you like having a movie that everything at the end is straight forward, cut and dry, this is exactly what happened, or do you like things to be ambiguous and open to the viewer interpretation?

I think that the debate and arguments by fans for an open ending can be fun, sometimes, but I much prefer a definitive answer. I don't like not knowing for SURE exactly how a story ends.

I'm in the cut and dry camp because I believe the Soprano's ending was retarded.

Good point. It seems like there's enough evidence to point to what "really" happened, but still I hate that not knowing for certain.

It's about fitting into what the author/artist wants to say. Not what you think you want to see.

I like the endings where there's a car and its driving off into the sunset with a fitting song playing and then the credits roll. Doesn't get any better than that IMO.
Not all movies have to be like that though, Inception's ending was brilliant even though it was left up for interpretation. Because that's what the whole movie was about, your interpretation.

i enjoy most movies, but i think i prefer a clear ending as well...doesn't necessarily need to be spelled out for me, but an ending where i can reasonably infer what happens

I like surprise endings but I want them to be cut and dry. None of that Inception/The Grey/Life of Pi shite.

The first movie that came to mind when I thought of the thread.

I guess I'm the only one that likes an ambiguous ending. I'm not talking Skyline bad ending. But more like a classic Italian movie. I enjoy the debate.

I don't mind it when a movie I'm not invested in does it, but to me a TV show should never.

I like it pretty sparingly. To me it can be more of a nuisance than artistic when it's too unclear how it ends. I think a good one is the end of Inception. At the end when he spins the top people wonder if its all a dream or not. That's playful to me. When you have an ending where you have no idea what the hell just happened that's aggravating to me

I generally like a clear ending that wraps everything up, but I don't like the climax to be quite that clear cut. I like my heroes and villains to be a little ambiguous until the end. I like the story to keep you guessing all the way up until the very end when everything is revealed. Sometimes, it's cool for the bad guys to win too (think "Skeleton Key" or "The Usual Suspects").

Inception doesn't work if you know how it comes out.

Some movies are art because of the ambiguous ending. It's better when the ambiguous ending is just hinted at, Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bladerunner, in my opinion, but sometimes it is better to really not know how the rest of the story is going to go, so your imagination remains engaged - Castaway and Inception being notable examples.

This is good for post movie discussion I guess, but I also think it tends to show laziness within the director/writers. I like movies to have closure that leaves you speechless. Don't make me think up my own ending, I came to watch your fricking movie, not finish it in my head......a-hole....

I like my ending to be realistic. If the hero gets shot 14 times, then he should die, not be miraculously saved and show in the next clip to be fine. Sometimes the hero needs to go

re: How do you like your movie endings?
depends on the story and how it serves the overall story.

what annoys me is when a movie is great, and they feel they have to make a follow up to explain why things were the way they were.

Leave some things up to the viewer's imagination.
