Don't get me wrong I'm super glad it's on Netflix, but how did NBC not pick it up?

It's hilarious

It's created by Tina Fey who already had a super successful NBC sitcom

The two lead actresses were both on super successful NBC sitcoms

It's extremely diverse, most characters are women, and the one main guy is gay and black

It's suitable for any demographic

Seems like a slam dunk for NBC so why did they not pick it up?

I want to like the show. I don't like the show. Most of the characters are horrible stereotypical caricatures.

Carol Cane - Horrible.
Jane Krakowski - Just playing a worse version of Jenna from 30 Rock.
Tituss Burgess - D'Fwan was great in small doses on 30 Rock. Not so much in larger doses on this show.
Blow Job Girl - I don't mind her character since she is supposed to be over the top from her captivity.

I watched the whole season but I'm not sure I will watch season 2.

Would you, if you worked at NBC?

I wouldn't, and I liked the show as well.

I think NBC said it wants to get away from the 30 rock/community era, and into more traditional sitcoms (trying to compete with CBS)

My understanding is that it had more to do with NBCs schedule than the show. There was nothing to pair it with. The only other comedy in the network is undateable.

I can see them passing pretty easily.

Seems like they took 3 characters from 30 Rock and slapped a new coat of paint on them.

D'Fwan - Just given more air time.
Jenna - Same character but instead of an actress she is a spoiled rich wife.
Kenneth - Fish out of water with religious issues. Just changed from a guy to a gal.

Cheaper less funny version of 30 Rock without the main component that made 30 Rock great, Jack Donaghy.

I'm with you on the first two, but Kimmy and Kenneth really aren't all that similar.
Kimmy is much more independent and rational than Kenneth, and she's really not religion driven at all. She was just captured by a crazy preacher.
They both have the small town Midwestern dreamer who knows nothing of the real world thing though

I saw this and thought you were talking about Chloe Sevigny and I was thinking "is she in that?"

Because NBC has to look at things like ratings and advertising and schedules and what shows to put around it and blah blah.

Netflix has none of that

NBC ordered the series, so clearly they were interested in it. Then they gave it away because they were concerned about the release date and not having something to compliment it in their lineup.

I think you're answer is right there. I'm guessing the initial pitch to NBC wasn't cheap. We've seen networks cancel plenty of shows that were doing decent in the ratings but not enough to justify the cost of the show.

I don't think people are saying it is of similar quality of 30 Rock, but rather that it is better than the vast majority of current network comedy shows.

It's a moderate success. And it still sucks.

Curious how you know it was a hit? Plenty of crappy shows get renewed so renewal isn't the sign of a hit.

I didn't think Netflix released actual viewing statistics which would be the real indicator if it is a hit or not.

So once again, how is it you know it was a hit?

Also, reviews or critical success is also not an indicator of whether a show would actual survive on the networks.

There seems to be a buzz about the show. There have been a lot of threads about the show on this site. I don't see many Undateable threads here.

The networks are just dying. Outside of Hannibal and The Last Man on Earth, all the drama and comedy shows they make are just weak sauce compared to what's on basic cable, premium cable and Netflix/Amazon.

Yep.

It grows tiresome FAST.

NONE of the characters are enjoyable.
