If this has been discussed, I've missed it. Anyway, Hoosiers is a repeat view movie for me and it's always bothered me that Buddy suddenly rejoins the team with zero explanation. Well, it turns out the editing required a 2 hour movie and that part was cut out. In fact, an entire character, Cletus' daughter, was cut out. Here's part of what happened with Buddy.

Buddy's second chance

Really cool post.

This is one of my favorite movies and I have always wondered about this.

I have long considered this the #1 Sports genre movie. But I'll be honest, I never gave it a second thought.

Dang. It was a pretty dramatic departure, and one Dad brings his son back. Then suddenly, Buddy is playing again.

I guess I'm jaded. I assumed it wound up on the cutting-room floor. I'm never surprised by poor editing.

I just figured that Buddy didn't want to be the sole focus of the team. He didn't want the his teammates to be upset with him if a coach rode him all year to be "the guy". After watching the coach he realized that the coach was more about the team than the individual and that the coach didn't care what anyone else thought. Buddy saw how the town was against the coach for no real reason and he decided he wanted to play for him (plus the town was saying Buddy would play if the coach went and Buddy knew that wasn't the case)

That was the reason I came up with anyway.

I think you're confusing Buddy with Jimmy Chitwood.

I tend to put it side by side with The Natural. they may not be the best acted or best made movies, but those two hold more of a sentimental place for me more than the other greatest sports movies i.e. Bull Durham, Major League, Rudy, or whatever most people list as their top sports movies.

Also, Nearly every basketball coach I ever played for has used the "their goals are 10' just like ours" bit in some sort of fashion before playing the best team in the league. I'd just close my eyes and imagine it was gene hackman giving the speech.

That scene is incredible.

I love the scene when he makes them only play 4 on the court and Hopper is laughing his arse off in the upper decks of the gym.

Dude won an Oscar for that role, and deservedly so.

ETA: Damn, he was only nominated, thought he won.

This confused the heck out of me for years and years.

I remember seeing it in the theater and one of the final shots of the team photo on the wall with 8 players and wondering where the 8th guy came from. I didn't realize that Buddy was the kid who got kicked out of the first practice.

It is hard to believe they couldn't find 2 other minutes to delete. But I guess there was probably another scene about Buddy going to play for another school and they figured this deleted scene wouldn't work w/o that one, but that is still better than an extra player showing up out of nowhere, IMO.

Unbelievable to me. Delete the stupid kiss scene first.

Pretty sure that's Cletus' daughter. All of her scenes were cut.

Behind The Sandlot IMO, but Hoosiers is awesome.

And sadly, as many times as I've seen this and as much as I love it, I am ashamed to say I never have thought twice about this before.

I remember when the special edition DVD came out, I bought it because it had the original final basketball game on it. It was really cool watching a game from that era, especially one that this movie sort of involves
