Strangers, NbNW, then Vertigo will probably be best if you want to study the evolution of his film style...though it didn't change TOO too much. I love Rear Window, tho; the dialogue is great. I first saw it in a theater in S'port and there's a scene with a glowing cigarette in the dark that was chilling and just doesn't translate onto the small screen.

I did enjoy Notorious a lot, too. It had me in suspense.
Another one I thought was interesting was I Confess. Haven't seen that mentioned much. Hitch hated working with Montgomery Cliff, too. Not a great movie, but interesting.

I watched Strangers on a Train last night. I went in not knowing a single thing about it, so I was thrown for a bit of a loop because for some reason in my head, I thought the whole movie was going to be on the train 
I won't post spoilers (at least I don't think these are too spoilerish), but I thought the person who played Bruno did a great job. He went from being just an awkward, annoying guy you sit next to while traveling to an ominous, somewhat frightening madman. And I did like how things turned out in the end.
Oh, and as others have said in the thread, there was a small bit of humor as well. I loved it when they were on the merry go round and that little kid starting throwing punches I wanted to tackle NbNW but it's like 2 hours and 20 minutes. I guess I'll do vertigo next and save nbnw for another time.

Vertigo is long and it will seem like it is even longer.

I was under the impression that was one of his best (or at least, one of his more popular and well known), but a few people above were saying it sucked. Would you say it's better or worse than Strangers? I only use that one as a reference because other than Psycho that's the only one I've seen.

It is worth a watch no matter what my opinion is of the film.
I haven't seen Strangers on a Train.
Vertigo has an interesting history. Critics hated it when it came out yet now they say it is one of his best. I don't see why they changed their mind.
I think the consensus on the Movie Board is that it is a great film. I disagree with the consensus and nobody has ever been able to explain away my gripes with the movie.

i agree with this...it seems that now, critically speaking, it has a much higher rating than anyone i know who's seen it would give...and i definitely prefer strangers on a train to vertigo.
eta: i also prefer rope to vertigo.

I taped Rear Window yesterday and watched it last night. It'd been a long time since I'd seen it, so I'd forgotten a lot of details. Fine movie. Grace Kelly was so beautiful. I still mourn the loss of her as an actress and as royalty.
I'm saving it on my Tivo for future viewing.

I LOVE Rebecca! I'm going to tape it when it comes on on the 17th. There are quite a few Hitchcock movies coming on Encore, Encore Suspense and TCM in the next few weeks. Taping all of them. I'm glad this thread came up. It's been a long time since I've seen Hitchcock movies and there are a number I've never seen.

I liked it up until the ending which was a bit ridiculous. Interesting to read that the actor playing Bruno was on the fast track to super stardom but demons got in the way. He died when his doctor sedated him with too much alcohol in his system.

BTW, ya'll feel free to bump this thread when you watch any of these movies...and as long as you properly label spoilers (so I know what posts to avoid), feel free to discuss the movies as you see fit. I plan on bumping this thread once I start getting into watching them anyway.

Vertigo is my favorite Hitchcock movie. It's a must see. Amazing though to see how Vertigo goes up and down the top movie lists. Right up there with Vertigo though are Rear Window, North by Northwest, and Dial M for Murder.
Actually got to see North By Northwest at the movies recently because Cinemark does classics over the summer. Nice to see it on the big screen.
And just a nod to an early Hitchcock film that I enjoyed--The Lady Vanishes. I saw someone else had mentioned it as well. Probably not very high on many lists, but I liked it.

Once I get through all or most of this list of movies, I am definitely open to getting more Hitchcock films depending on how I'm feeling after watching these.

Not too spoilery...only slightly.
Bruno is on my shortlist for favorite movie villains. There were several great scenes with him in that movie. The tennis scene where everyone if following the ball except Bruno whose eyes stay fixed the whole time. The love boat scene, the party scene when things get weird with him the old lady, the typical great Hitchcock staircase scene; "Don't worry, I'm not going to shoot you,_______. It might disturb mother." And of course the carousel scene.

I remember being really suprised too and then completely blown away at the ending, one of the best endings to a movie that I have seen. People must have been shocked in 1951 when this came out. This post was edited on 4/8/13 at 2:39 pm
