Historical revisionism in movies really pisses me off

There's Braveheart, of course... anything Mel Gibson produces is expected to be full of crap.
But last night I pulled a movie off the clubhouse shelf.. "The Great Debaters" by Oprah Winfrey, based on a true story. A debate team from tiny Wiley College of Marshall, Texas, goes to Harvard in 1935 to take on the big boys. I was unfamiliar with the story, and while the movie had a made-for-TV quality about it, I was moved.
Except that it never happened. The debate team went to USC, not Harvard. I feel exploited and angry.

I bet you hated Inglorious Bastards.
I know what you mean though. Like when they change major parts of the story to make you give a shite about Rudy.

I doubt there is one single movie that doesn't at least embellish. Esp the older and less detailed the source material gets.

Remember The Titans.
But if a movie was 100% spot on with no embellishment, it would be called a dramatic reenactment.

I actually loved that about IB.
SPOILERS
The whole movie, like the movie Valkyrie, youre thinking "how are they going to fail because obviously Hitler wasnt assassinated?"
Then wham. I was blown away. I couldnt think of another movie that used an historical event as the backdrop and then completely veered off the path.

So did I. I was just kidding.
I dont think anybody expected IB to be historically accurate and QT didn't claim it was like some of these other movies did.

From what I have read We Were Soldiers was pretty accurate.

Disney's Pocahontas shits on everything about Jamestown.

Yeah, Argo pissed me off with this, especially Jimmy Carter 's VoiceOver at the end.
Lincoln was just as bad too.

Except for that crazy random charge up the hill at the end.

They got Abe Lincoln's vampire killing methods all wrong.

You mean to tell me that Hollywood tried to manipulate you with a fictionalized account of real events? I'm shocked and outraged "Based on a true story" means that there is enough similarity that it is a legal and/or marketing advantage to mention someone unrelated to the production of the movie.

Fun fact: WW2 did NOT end with Hitler being shot in a theater by American Jews. Unfortunately all records were lost so no one truly knows how Hitler died or which side actually won the war, but historians do agree that he was not killed in the manner depicted in the film.

Apocolypto is one of the greatest movies of all-time and anyone that disagrees needs to watch it again.
