SPOILERS

So the audiobook for Independence Day: Resurgence is now available, and I've spent the last few days listening to it. Surprisingly, the story isn't afraid to delve into hardcore science fiction, although we'll have to wait and see just how much of this actually makes it into the film. But given that this is the official novelization of the film, I'm optimistic that most of this won't be cut out given that the running time is 150 minutes.

A complete plot summary is below. I apologize in advance for any chronological redundancies or grammatical oddities, either with spelling or sentence structure - I was listening to the audio book at 2x speed and was typing this out as I listened.

Part 1

Joshua Adams, a longtime General that was present during the war in the first film, is summoned to Area 51. After the war, he helped establish the ESD program (Earth Space Defense), which focused on understanding and augmenting human military equipment with the foreign alien technology. While humanity has made progress in reverse engineering the alien tech, they’re still in the dark regarding most of its complexities. Nevertheless, humanity has learned enough to become a space faring species, and has established bases on the Moon, Mars, and Rhea, one of Saturn’s moons. One of the most recent technological discoveries made based on the alien’s tech is a replication of their energy cannons (the laser cannons on the city destroyers from the first film) – smaller versions of that cannon were now present in Area 51, as well as on all extra-planetary bases.

--------

President Whitmore has been experiencing depression and mental anguish ever since the passing of his wife – the telepathic torture he experienced during the war has only exacerbated his condition. He frequently dreams of an odd spherical symbol with lines crossing through it, although he feels these dreams are more than just dreams, but are rather some type of psychological residue or telepathic nexus with the aliens. His daughter, Patricia, dropped out of flight school to be closer to and take care of him. She now currently serves as a speech writer and administrative assistant to President Lanford.

Dr. Brakish Okun (the scientist with the long gray hair) has been comatose ever since he was telepathically assaulted by the alien on which they were conducting surgery in the first film.

Steve Hiller (Will Smith’s character) died during a test flight of a prototype craft that utilized some of the alien's technology.

Julius Levinson (David’s dad) wrote a book on the events during the war of 96, and is spending his time traveling the country on a book tour promoting his work, usually with tepid reaction from a less than stellar sized crowd.

Jasmine Hiller (the former stripper) is now a pediatric nurse. Her son, Dylan, befriended Patricia during the first film when they were young, and is now a superstar pilot in the ESD program.

--------

Adams lands at Area 51. He’s escorted into a vast research wing of Area 51 that was specifically built to harbor biomedical and genetic testing of aliens that have been acquired from the war of 1996. The dozens of aliens, however, while biologically alive, have been catatonic and inactive for the past 20 years. Adams quickly discovers why he was summoned, as upon walking in he views the rows of cells housing the aliens, all of which have awoken, and are thrashing themselves around their respective rooms.

--------

David Levinson (Goldbloom) is being driven by UN escorts to a classified site in the Congo. Upon arriving at the border, they are met by a local militia armed with alien tech. Just before things get hostile, Dr. Catherine Marceaux, who was already on site, breaks things up and allows David to pass through. Catherine is a psychologist and has been a love interest of David’s ever since Connie(his previous wife) died after the war. Dikembe, the local tribe leader, leads both of them to one of the downed motherships from the war of 96 – which was now powered up and active. The local tribe leaders note that it had suddenly become active without any inducement from the locals.

The activation of the ship reignited its anti-gravitational properties, allowing traversal to occur underneath the ship. The leader of the local tribe escorted David and Catherine to a large hole that had just been discovered underneath the ship – indicating that this particular mothership was drilling into the Earth’s core when it was brought down 20 years ago.

With certain portions of the city destroyer now open, Catherine, David, and Dikembe make their way into the ship, eventually arriving at the large, cavernous control center. David notices that this particular ship sent out a distress signal (burst in the X band frequency directed towards deep space) after the mothership was destroyed 20 years ago – this ship was one of the few that wasn’t initially destroyed by Earth’s forces after the shields were disabled, and didn’t suffer immediate destruction upon crashing into the Earth (since it was drilling). It sent out a distress call, and then automatically shut itself down.

Part 2

Catherine notices an odd, spherical shaped symbol etched in on various walls inside the ship. It’s of particular interest to her, because many of her patients that have claimed to have experienced alien type visions all report seeing a similar symbol.

As David and Catherine exit the ship, David receives a call notifying him that ESD has lost contact with the military outpost on Rhea. They travel to Dikembe's compound to try and make contact with the Pentagon and ESD. When Dikembe hears Catherine telling David of this symbol, he reveals that he had visions of the same symbol just days ago when the ship powered on.

ESD eventually makes contact with David, and they send him satellite imagery of the area around Saturn – the rings around the planet are deformed and askew, and many of the moons, including Rhea, are completely missing.

On the moon base, Jake Morrison is resting after helping with the installation of the latest energy cannon. Dylan Hiller is also present on the base. Dylan, Jake, and Patricia all went to flight school together, although Patricia dropped out to take care of her father, and Jake was kicked out after nearly colliding with Dylan’s ship during a training exercise. Given that Dylan’s step-father (Will Smith) was a legendary pilot and war hero, it was Jake that was kicked out of the program, while Dylan was allowed to stay. Dylan is now a superstar pilot of the Legacy Squadron in the ESD, while Jake is simply a technical/cargo pilot. They’re all friends with David, particularly Jake.

They suddenly notice a large distortion in space – it started as a tear in space, then grew into what looked like a massive hole. The hole turned into a massive maelstrom, as various rocks and debris started being sucked in towards it. Something started to take shape inside the vortex, which then appeared to be in motion. The object, which now appeared to be a ship, exited the apparent wormhole. It was a large, spherical ship, and started emanating a blue pattern of light.

David gets on a call with President Lanford and some Generals, while also receiving a real time feed of the events occurring outside of the moon. David has spent decades studying the alien technology, and informs Lanford that the ship and its methods are distinctly different from the aliens that attacked 20 years ago. The Generals and various UN members hypothesize that the aliens upgraded their tech, and eventually Lanford makes the decision to fire on the ship. The ship is brought down on first contact with the green energy beam from the cannon, and crashes on the moon. Humanity collectively cheers, feeling invulnerable to the type of attacks that occurred 20 years prior, although David had his reservations about the origin of the ship, as well as its intentions.

--------

During the chaos, Area 51 and the Pentagon lose their connection with the ESD outpost on Mars. They start investigating as the world starts celebrating its newfound military might.

President Lanford schedules an address to the world to notify them of the success of the ESD program and the recent attack. She invites David, but he rejects the invitation, feeling the need to get to the crash site on the moon to discover the origins of the ship. He calls Jake for help, to which Jake agrees. Jake takes a cargo ship from the moon down to the Earth to pick up David, Catherine, and Dikembe, and then makes his way back up to the moon near the crash site. Apparently given his familiarity with the radar detection systems that have been installed in the past decade, he knows how and where to fly to avoid being detected. They make their way over to the dark side of the moon, where they discover the wreckage from the crashed ship, which spans for many kilometers – many of the individual debris pieces are the size of buildings. Jake and David suit up and make their way into the debris field in search of anything that could give them clues as to the origin of the ship. Eventually, David discovers an odd looking spherical object, which appears to be strangely similar in appearance to the spherical symbols Catherine described to him earlier.

Back in a hospital near Area 51, Okun wakes up out of his 20 year coma. He immediately starts scrambling around, drawing alien looking spherical shaped symbols with lines crossing through them on the walls of the room.

President Lanford starts giving her address to a crowd of thousands, which is also televised and streamed throughout the world. A live video feed is made to the ESD base on the moon, where Dylan and other Legacy Squadron members perform a flyover for the people of Earth. Whitmore, afflicted with visions, feels the need to reveals something to the world, and is given the opportunity to speak. Before he can, though, the flyover is performed on the Moon, during which a massive ship spanning hundreds of miles in size becomes viewable. It approaches the moon, and due to the strong gravitational force generated by the ship, the ESD outpost starts to degrade. The ship is unmistakably similar to the previous mothership from decades ago, although much more massive in scale. The ESD fires its energy cannon at the ship, which proves to be completely ineffectual. The gravity from the ship creates a chaotic minefield for Jake and David, as they scamper back to the cargo ship with the spherical object, dodging the swirling debris around them. Eventually, the ship fires its green energy cannon which destroys a third of the moon, wiping out the entire ESD base in the process. The remaining Legacy Squadron fighters return to Area 51, while Jake and David’s cargo ship becomes affixed to the underside of the massive alien mothership due to the strength of its gravitational pull.

Part 3

The alien mothership makes its way into Earth’s atmosphere and makes entry over Asia and the Middle East. As it slows, its gravitational pull strengthens. Entire cities are ripped up from the Earth as the mothership merely soars overhead. It eventually comes to a stop, and its gravitational pull weakened – all of the debris underneath the ship, from pieces of the moon to actual buildings, come crashing down. Jake and David take off, dodging the debris, and head off towards Area 51. The mothership initiates its landing gear and set down on the surface, creating massive title waves across the ocean.

Dr. Brakish Okun, now conscious, leaves his medical room and makes his way to the wing of Area 51 where the aliens are being kept and experimented. He meets up with Adams, Whitmore, and Patricia. The aliens are still thrashing about in their cells. Okun notes that they’re celebrating. Desperate for answers, Whitmore takes matters into his own hands, and locks himself into a chamber that opens up into one of the cells. He opens the cell to one of the aliens as gas floods his chamber, with everyone watching safely on the other side. Eventually, Whitmore’s body slams against the glass, with an alien tentacle wrapped around his neck. David and Jake arrive in the room as this is going on, and David asks Whitmore if he can hear them. Whitmore responds, “She has arrived.” David asks Whitmore (the alien) who “she” is, to which the alien replies through Whitmore, “She is all.” David asks what she wants, to which the alien replied, “Your planet. Feed and grow. Feed and grow.”

The guards and everyone outside the glass starts firing to free Whitmore. The glass shatters, and Whitmore’s body falls to the ground. The alien leaps out into the room, grabs a gun, and starts firing. Everyone ducks for cover, except Dikembe, who takes out his machetes and slices the alien in the back. The alien drops to the ground with its exoskeleton pierced open – it slithers out in an injured fashion. Dikembe then takes one of the machetes and drives it through the skull of the alien.

They regroup and notice that the mothership has set down over the Atlantic, and has initiated its energy beam with the intent of drilling deep into the Earth. David gets on a conference call with Lanford and other remaining world leaders, and posits that they’re attempting to reach the molten core of the Earth, presumably for energy. The plan follows as last time – find a way to take out their shields and take down the mothership. Based on the information from the alien, and the behavior of the aliens in general, David posits that the aliens function like a hive, taking orders from one powerful Queen. The Queen is protected in a central compartment within the mothership. The plan is to disable the shields with a fleet of drones, with ESD fighters then escorting bombers with cold fusion warheads. They hypothesized that the size of the blast would penetrate the hull far enough to reach and kill the alien Queen in the middle of the ship.

--------

Dr. Okun starts inspecting the spherical object that David brought back from the crashed ship on the moon. He tries to open it repeatedly over the course of many hours, but can’t seem to do it.

President Lanford is hidden away in a special military complex – her location, however, is discovered by the aliens – they break through and kill everyone and abduct Lanford.

--------

The drones start making their way towards the mothership as David, Adams, and the other Generals watch in the Command Center in Area 51. The drones approach the mothership and detonate, seemingly neutralizing the shield on the mothership. The ESD fighter jets come in shortly thereafter, with Jake and Dylan leading the way. As they approach the mothership, massive hangars open up, releasing thousands of individual fighters that have been clearly upgraded since the last encounter 20 years ago – they’re faster, more agile, and have more advanced weaponry. The ESD fighters start getting picked apart, and the alien craft recognize the bombers carrying the cold fusion warheads, and start to focus on taking those down. Unable to get anywhere near the center of the ship, Jake and Dylan decide to lead a group of bombers into the mothership through one of the open hangars. They weave through the miles of cavernous tunnels, which eventually opens up into a large central area – so large that it is almost impossible to discern the curvature of the room. They start making their way up, trying to find the Queen’s ship in the middle.

Whitmore, who was unconscious after his recent encounter with the alien, snaps up in bed in his medical room and starts screaming, “She knows, she knows.”

Suddenly, the thrusters in the fighters that had made it to the interior of the mothership started to fail, and they start plummeting to the bottom of the cavern. Jake and Dylan tell the Command Center to detonate the bombs, because they don’t want to die for nothing – after much hesitancy, they release the cold fusion warheads from the falling bombers. However, once the bombs are released, they are immediately contacted by small inanimate alien objects – as the bombs blow up, the blasts are perfectly contained into small spheres, resulting in zero damage. As everyone in the Command Center looks on helplessly, an energy bolt was shot up from the center of the mothership into space, creating a ricochet type explosion that took out the ring of satellites at every level of geo-stationary orbit. The video and data feeds to the Command Center cut, and all the screens turn black.

Part 4

Lanford wakes up in a massive room. She notices a person approaching her, only to realize a tentacle wrapped around the person’s neck – she realizes she is on the mothership. The person speaks, “Where is it?” A holographic image appears, showing the spherical ship that had emerged from the wormhole just a few days prior, and this played on a continuous loop in front of Lanford. “We shot it down, it crashed on the moon”, Lanford replied. “Not the ship…I want what was inside.” Suddenly, a massive alien head appeared above her – the head of the alien Queen, at least 100 feet in height. Lanford knew she was about to die.

Meanwhile, Okun works incessantly on attempting to open the spherical object. Eventually, he finally breaks it open as Catherine and David walk into the room. After running scans on the spherical object, they are surprised to find that such an advanced technological object isn’t giving off any electromagnetic signal…almost as if it is trying to remain hidden. After the sphere was inadvertently touched by a nearby worker, it suddenly started moving, and levitated above the ground, such that it was at eye level with everyone in the room.

It then started to speak in a calm, monotonous tone – “I activated myself when I detected your biological signature to be different from theirs. I deconstructed your primitive language using your radio signals after you failed to recognize my attempt to communicate. My kind shed our biological existence for a virtual one thousands of years ago. I carry the combined intelligence of my entire species. Of all the species in all of the galaxies that they have faced, you are the only ones that have ever defeated them. When I intercepted their distress call, I knew they would come to exterminate you. I came to evacuate as many of you as possible.” David then asked, “Why did they come back now, after 20 years?” The sphere replied, “Time is relative in space travel. 20 years for you was only days for them. I tried to warn you, but you attacked me with the same weapons they used on us.”

It continued, “A harvester ship conquered our planet, and sucked out its molten core. They used planetary cores to refuel their ships and grow their technology. They have done this to thousands of species. They are Armageddon, the end of everything.” The sphere then projected a hologram, showing the harvester sucking the molten core from a planet, with a smaller ship budding from the hull of the harvester and detaching – which looked very similar to the mothership that invaded Earth 20 years ago. The combination of advanced biotechnology and materials sciences knowledge possessed by the alien race started to induce pure fright in David. The hologram then showed a swarm of spherical ships surrounding the harvester, and falling one by one. “I was the sole survivor”, the sphere finished.

David then asked, “Do you have a plan?” Another hologram replaced the first, showing an Earth like planet. “There is a planet where survivors from other fallen worlds work to build weapons to defeat them once and for all. Your victory was our inspiration. But now that I am activated, the Queen will detect my signature, and hunt me down.”

Whitmore, given his telepathic connection to the aliens, nodded that she was coming their way.

David asks what happens if and when they take down the Queen, to which the sphere replied, “No one has ever killed a harvester Queen. But as a hive, I believe her soldiers will fall, but it is too late now. You must terminate me, or she will acquire the coordinates of the refugee planet. And that will be the end.”

Suddenly, David had an idea.

--------

Dylan, Jake, and some of the other pilots that had survived the crash found themselves peering up at the massive mothership. They noticed, however, that one of the hangars remained open, and was located just above the landing gear. They had no other choice but to start climbing, with the hope of commandeering a few alien ships once they made their way up to the hangar.

David starting detailing his plan to the rest of the room, explaining that he wanted to replicate the sphere’s RF radiation signal. The RFR for the sphere is completely off the charts, which is what the Queen detected when they unlocked it. The plan is to put the sphere inside the isolation chamber at the base and pack a decoy transmitter on a tug loaded with cold fusion warheads, which they could then fly into the interior of the Queen’s ship and blow it from the inside. The shield generators on the base would contain the blast and protect the base. And since the satellites had been taken out, the cargo ship needed to be flown manually into the Queen's ship, meaning this was going to be a suicide mission for someone. Whitmore volunteers.

As Okun places the sphere in the isolation chamber, he stops, turns back, and reenters the chamber. He activates the sphere, and it slowly levitates into the air as it did before. Okun asks the sphere to show him everything it knew. David’s dad, Julius, makes it onto the base after hitchhiking a ride with some people he met in Texas.

The Queen’s ship arrives near Area 51 with thousands of escort fighters. All remaining pilots and human fighters lift off and engage in battle. Whitmore climbs into the cargo ship carrying the decoy signal and lifts off as a fleet of fighters paves the way for him. Patricia, not having had an opportunity to say goodbye to her father, hops in a fighter and catches up to him, helping fend off alien fighters and saying goodbye to her father one last time. Eventually, Whitmore loses control of his ship, as the Queen ships's tractor beam starts to bring his ship in. Suddenly, Whitmore starts screaming over the radio, “She’s in my head…she knows, she knows!” The doors to the Queen's ship start to close, but Whitmore’s ship makes it through at the last second. The shields go up around the base, and the Queen gazes directly at Whitmore. Then, he pulls the trigger and the bombs go off.

Part 4 (continued)

Cheers erupt from the Command Center as the blast goes off, but Catherine soon notices that the individual alien crafts are still fighting. They then look back towards the cloud of dust, and notice a massive creature emerging from the destruction, hundreds of feet height, encased in an advanced exoskeleton.

The isolation chamber was filled with a constellation of holographic schematic drawings, star charts, and blueprints for machinery beyond human comprehension. With this knowledge, Okun knew humanity stood at the forefront of a new golden age. Information on space-time, physics, fusion energy, wormholes, and interstellar travel poured into the room.

The Queen starts making her way towards the base. Human fighters pelt her with gunfire. Patricia makes repeated attempts to bring her down, but eventually gets taken out by one of the Queen’s claws and has to evacuate her ship. Eventually, the armor on the Queen starts to degrade, and she appears vulnerable. Individual alien fighters collectively converge on her, and swirl and fly around her, creating a tornado shaped shield.

One of the blasts from the ships hits the wing of the compound where the aliens are housed, setting them free. They converge on the isolation chamber, which still houses Okun and the sphere. Gunfire breaks out as guards attempt to protect the sphere and prevent the aliens from reaching the room. They are successful, but only until the roof of the base is ripped off, as the Queen reaches down and grabs the sphere as Okun ducks for cover.

Dylan and Jake show up in their commandeered alien crafts, and attack the Queen repeatedly from above the shield, which is the only area in which she is exposed. She eventually goes down after repeated hits, and her armor completely falls apart. She slithers out of her armor towards the sphere…when she finally meets her demise after being run over by a bus driven by Julius, David’s dad. Individual alien craft then start plummeting from the sky, ending the fight. The harvester stops drilling, lifts its landing gear, and floats off into the abyss of space.

--------

Dylan, Jake, and Patricia all reunite with David, Okun, Adams, Catherine, and everyone else at Area 51. While most are celebrating, David is reluctant to do so, noting that there are more harvesters out there, and that the planet would most certainly not be able to withstand another attack. Okun arrives with the sphere in hand, and informs David that the sphere wants humanity to lead their galactic resistance against the harvesters. Okun mentions that the sphere will show them the secrets of interstellar travel, allowing humanity to join the refugees from other civilizations and lead a counter offensive against the remaining harvesters.

Didn't read. I'll never understand why anyone would want to completely spoil a movie for themselves before seeing it.

So this is fanfiction ? I never get the need of people to feel that vindicated by stating their Idea as fact.

The plot is hardcore science fiction and very intriguing if you're in to that kind of thing - the actual quality of the film will obviously depend on how well all of this comes together on screen.

It's the official novelization of the film, so it's not fake.

You can clearly identify half of these scenes in most of the trailers.

I think the concept is pretty cool. Some of it is pretty eye roll. I want to find out more about the alien planet for survivors. It seems like they are going pretty hard with setting up sequels. They could go full scale space opera with this which could be a lot of fun imo.

I usually don't listen to audiobooks, but the text based version of the novelization won't be out until the movie is released - so this was the only option.
