Watching Westworld and Walking Dead last night....

...why is AMC so terrible?

AMC is money grubbing and it shows on the screen.

HBO is not and it shows on the screen.

The fact that a cash cow like The Walking Dead has to deal with budget constraints is beyond insane.

Westworld broke my brain last night because it was so incredible and TWD broke my brain because it was so awful.

HBO throws money in and the viewers come around.

AMC runs tight budgets and the viewers leave.

Apart from their original programming like Mad Men and Better Call Saul, etc.

AMC is unwatchable for non-original programming because ...they show more commercials than anyone in the world.

I watched Swordfish awhile back or Pulp Fiction and the movie took 4 hours...started at 7 and finished at 11. Commercial breaks last forever - you can go wash your car and not miss anything.

AMC started their brand in the late 80's airing classics commercial free and unedited! One of the first channels.

Now they edit, and despite the editing the movies last forever.

I guess they have to cram in all their advertising in other movies to make up for how they air their original programming.

Their steaming services are geared towards money grubbing as well, even for those with a provider sign in.

They are just awful.

It's the type of shows that they are made to be. Walking Dead is so popular for being a simple, kind of low complexity show that has a lot of general appeal. It has always been kind of shitty (I still watch btw), but that is part of the appeal. These are just the different products that they are selling. They fill different niches.

To be fair, HBO is investing heavily in Westworld because they're hoping it can replace Thrones in terms of critical success and popularity.

Based on some of the previous shows and the fact that it took Westworld so long to be renewed, I'm thinking their model may be to bet big early and pull the plug if needed.

AMC is basic cable, HBO is premium cable. Not a fair comparison. GOT and Curb (new season coming) are great shows but I'll put Breaking Bad, Mad Men and now Better Call Saul up against any show HBO has made in the last 10 years. AMC has to be one of the best if not the best basic cable channel in terms of original content.

The Walking Dead is trash and you can blame yourself for still watching.

Haven't seen Westworld yet but to me it looks like they're just throwing a bunch of money around trying to feed off the GOT popularity with another huge budget epic. I'd rather a show that takes great writing and talent (Curb/BB/Mad Men) to make it good, not one relying on a gigantic budget that no one else can compete with.

I prefer all of those to Westworld (though that's not saying much since those are three of my all time favorites), but the talent is Westworld is insane. Better actors than any of those shows (Hopkins, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Wood and Newton) and Jonathan Nolan has had a hand in a lot of his brother's great films.

I left the house to go and see a movie, my wife was watching The Godfather on AMC. I came home after, I said, "They're playing The Godfather again?" She said, "No, it's the same one. It's just not finished yet."

I meant talent from the creator/writer/director(s). Seeing Hopkins and Harris brings me back to the gigantic budget the show has. Cranston and Hamm were perfectly casted and turned in some of the best acting in TV history, basic cable or otherwise. The main cast of characters did great in those two shows as well (better than GOT, I'd argue). No great acting in Curb but David is probably GOAT comedic writer.

This thread is making me want to watch Westworld soon.

HBO is better as a whole, but AMC still holds the honor of airing the best series in the history of television: Breaking Bad.

I wouldn't classify it as "terrible"...

Mad Men?
Breaking Bad?
Better Call Saul?
Walking Dead?
Into the Badlands?
Hell on Wheels?
Longmire?
