Has there ever been a phenomenon quite like Avatar?

The movie was released in late-2009, quickly became the highest grossing film of all-time, and then just vanished off the face of the earth. It's like the movie was forgotten about despite it making almost $3 billion at the global box office.

Compare that to Titanic. That film did massive box office and captured the imagination of the public at large and continues to occupy a lofty space in pop culture. It's quotable and everyone remembers that song by Celine Dion.

I saw Avatar in theaters and I honestly can't tell you anything about it other than the fact that it lifted its plot straight from Pocahontas/Dances with Wolves.

Because The Titanic really happened.

Avatar was all promotion, supposed crazy new technology - all wrapped up in a glorified cartoon Fern Gully.

Plus Titanic is actually good with two great actors, Leo and Kate.

Fern "Avatar" is not even a good movie.

I do find it odd that I never regularly see it on any cable networks.

A buddy and I smoked a huge blunt in the parking lot at Rave right before we walked in and it was probably one of the best movie experiences i've ever had. Have watched it sober a few times since and I still love it. I'm patiently waiting for the sequel.

I have a theory about this.

I think Cameron has tried to erase Avatar from our memory so that when he releases the sequels, he can advertise that it was this extravagant and pivotal moment in film history. Many people will think back to the hype and because they are ignorant sheep, they'll just go along with the new wave of hype.

If Avatar was playing on cable all the time, people would be aware of how mediocre its universe is.

It's not a bad movie, but it was James Cameron and he hyped it like it was the next Star Wars. It should have been legendary. Instead it was just a popcorn flick.

Avatar is only good if you see it in 3D in the theaters. Even then, it was 2 hours too long.

I think everyone liked it at the time because of how well it was supposed to be in 3D. I never saw it in theaters, so my first time seeing it was on cable and I thought it sucked. People must have been so enthralled with the 3D that they didn't even notice the story.

Honestly, I didn't even notice the 3D all that much.

I like it.
Yes, it has the predictable "outsider joining a tribe" storyline, but I still watch it when it comes on.
I don't get the hate.
