Actually, he's rignt in a way. One of the early iterations of the Guardians of the Galaxy (maybe the first) was a team based in the future when the earth had been conquered by a race called the Badoon. The Guardians were freedom fighters.
The members included a Yondu who at least somewhat resembles the guy in the first movie. Other members were Major Vance Astro - a time displaced astronaut from the 20th century, Charlie 27, a super strong guy, Martinex, a crystal guy, Starhawk a kind of creepy slightly supernatural type and a girl (Nikki I think) who had flames for hair.
A time travelling Thing and Captain America teamed up with them in some old Marvel Two in One comics.

I read somewhere that the villains are none other than the Church of the Universal Truth, which would make sense with everyone dressed in gold.
Hoping for a Cardinal Raker and Adam Warlock appearance.
