GRRM - "We're not doing Robert's Rebellion"

Screenwriter Jane Goldman, who is working on a future series with Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, says they'll be covering territory you've heard about already.
If I was able to say what mine was," Goldman told IGN, "I think as a book reader or as someone who watched the series, you would say, 'Oh, that! OK.' Yeah, it would be recognizable as a past event, but I think that’s probably as far as I can go.'

"We're not doing Robert's Rebellion," said Martin. "By the time I finish writing A SONG OF ICE & FIRE, you will know every important thing that happened in Robert's Rebellion. There would be no surprises or revelations left in such a show, just the acting out of conflicts whose resolutions you already know. That's not a story I want to tell just now; it would feel too much like a twice-told tale."

A better option might be to focus on "Dance of the Dragons," a civil war within House Targaryen that led to the deaths of several rulers and the destruction of most of the dragons possessed by the family. The battle between family members would reflect the politics fans love on the main Game of Thrones show, and of course, we'd get a metric ton of dragon battles, which I don't think anyone would turn down.
I'm okay with it. I'm not sure I was ever too enthusiastic about RR, as most people know almost every facet of it. The Dance of Dragons and The Long Night have more room for original storytelling.
Others will disagree.

Perhaps a limited series/miniseries on the Greyjoy Rebellion?
I'm pretty sure a lot of people would love to see the Siege of Pyke brought to life.

Dunk and Egg has potential too. But Dance with Dragons would be cool as well

They won't CGI a wolf but people think they will drop the cash to CGI shite loads of dragons flying around? i don't see this being it and I don't think I would really want it to be. i would rather see a story more grounded than that.
I would love to see a story based in old Valyria with a handful of dragons but more grounded in the lore of it.
or go with the story of the long night based in Yi Ti with the five forts rather than in Westeros but I don't see that happening.

Better would be the Blackfyre -
While the potential there is for it to be cheesy - with folks trying to hard too be Bittersteel, Bloodraven, etc., but if they get the acting and writing quality of the early seasons of GoT - it could work - I would "tune in" as the kids say. That event also, essentially, set the table for the Mad King's desecent and Robert's Rebellion - making it almost a prologue to GoT.

Who actually thought it wouldn't be The Dance of Dragons?
Most hodors watch because of the dragons.
Like GRRM said, its the more political driven and GOT-ish past story you could show on TV.
It's literally GOT minus the Lich err Night King.

Thank Christ. I've never understood why so many people wanted to see RR when there are so many cooler, unknown stories to tell in that universe. DoD would be good seeing the Dragonlords duke it out, and I've also always thought they could tell whatever stories they wanted to in the Age of Heroes (and maybe actually include the direwolves this time). However, if my prediction about the ending is right at all, we are actually watching the Age of Heroes now before Bran hits the reset button on the Ragnorak wheel.

I'm hoping for Dance of the Dragons

The Long Night
I think that's the one area that both needs the most story telling and would also be the most engaging. Similar to how ASOIAF was, I want to see it start with happy and prosperous, the worst of the worst, and the dawn.

That would be a really interesting twist

I'd settle for a six episode miniseries event depicting the Fall of Valyria.

Meh - the acting and writing for GOT was clearly stronger through Season 3 than it is now.
It's not snobbery, it's just a fact.

It's opinion, dude. Your opinion.
Personally, I could listen to Beric say stuff all day. He could be reading from the phone book and it would be great.

There are still some bright spots - but that's the point. It was all bright spots early.
Jaime is a weaker character on the show than in the novels for example. The actor has followed the writing down that hole with it. Tyrion is also clearly weaker as we go along. I don't think the actors have regressed, just the writing, acting and directing. Weak sause like Grey Worm/Missendei have only compounded this.
But, when you lose characters like Tywin, High Sparrow and now, Queen of Thorns - they're being replaced with kids who just aren't up to it - the characters in the novels aren't showing up on screen - that's what I'm saying.
