Game of Thrones
Farscape
Heroes
Dexter
LOST

I also thought Fringe and Alias started out very well... Maybe not as much BANG as the above, but enough to get me hooked instantly.

Firefly would have been AWESOME if they had actually aired the pilot episode first.

Yeah, Dexter had a great pilot, and it really displayed everything that made the early seasons awesome.

The Shield is my answer though.
Probably one of the ballsiest pilots.

I agree with most people on the Shield. Nip/Tuck also had a great pilot despite what became of the rest of the show.

There was a show on FOX a couple years back that only lasted a couple seasons called John Doe. Pilot really hooked me on that one.

Also liked Keen Eddie. Stylistically, it had a Layer Cake/Lock Stock.../Guy Ritchie kinda vibe... Started on FOX but was quickly shelved then made its way to Bravo where NOBODY was watching ANYTHING.

Keen Eddie pilot (full episode on youtube) You can enjoy the entire short-lived series for free on youtube. FWIW - This was the show that put Sienna Miller on the map.

Happened with Star Trek, too. The suits wanted a "bug-eyed monster" (BEM) in the first show to air, so we got "The Man Trap" - a nice little Dr. McCoy story, but "Where No Man Has Gone Before" would have been a much stronger first chapter and gave the new audience a better idea about what Star Trek was all about.

In Firefly's case, the powers that be wanted more action, so "Train Job" was aired first.

In a classic example, Firefly was "too good" to be on television at that time. Ironically, with the much better products coming out of the cable networks now, it might have survived today. (Although for every Breaking Bad, GoT, etc., we get 3 shows like Buckwild, Kardashians or Honey Boo Boo.)

Scrubs had a pretty well done pilot IIRC.

Completely hooked me to Walter White's story. That episode covered so much ground.

Never seen friday night lights but heard great things. The Cheers pilot alone got me engaged in the show, that show did a great job of getting you invested in the characters IMO

It's a great show. It has a few come on moments and guys that's are suppose to be SRs and the best players end up being Jrs and sophomores and stay for a couple seasons if you get that out if the way then it's really awesome

LOST I think set the bar. The crash sequence is still the most expensive scene in TV history.

Was coming here to post this. I think people forget how awesome that show started because of how weak it was the last couple of seasons. The pilot was perfect IMO.

Agree with Game of Thrones, Lost, Chuck, Miami Vice, and FNL.

Game of Thrones, not only the pilot but the opening 10 minutes of them in the forrest with the white walkers, still gives me chills

I hadn't read the books at that point and I was pretty much hooked after that scene.

Freaks and Geeks pilot was great too. The opening from the jock and cheerleader talking on top of the bleachers then it pans down, Running With the Devil starts, and you see Franco and Co. is great.

I like a lot of the suggestions on here, but I'll throw out an underdog: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. That terrific pilot made the complete piece of crap the show was afterwards really hurt. It was like how could the same people make the pilot and then the rest of the show? But Sorkin has always made great pilots. SportsNight is still my favorite, and that show never dipped in quality.

The west wing. That build up to seeing sheen as the president for the first time was great. And when he finally spoke it was just brilliant.
